She hurried down the boardwalk, head lowered, deep in thought, when she ran smack into a wall of muscle.

“Whoa.” Wes captured both of her arms as she slammed into his warm chest. “Where you going in such a hurry?” The moonlight caught his expression as he frowned. “And what are you doing out on the streets this late at night?”

Anna bristled. “Is there a law against it, marshal?”

He grinned.

Why did she always feel like a little girl when she locked horns with this man?

“No, ma’am. I’m just trying to protect the people of the town. Especially from women who can clobber a fella without raisin’ dust.”

“Are you making fun of me?”

He held both hands up in surrender, his lips twitching. “Not me.” He cupped her elbow. “Allow me to escort you to the hotel, Miss Devlin.”

She slanted him a glance. “My, how chivalrous.”

Slowly, he slid her arm into the crook of his elbow and rested his hand on hers. “Seriously, Anna, you shouldn’t be running around town after dark. Life can be dangerous. You never know...”

Something in his voice made her look sharply at him. The lines bracketing his mouth had tightened, and she could feel the tension in his arm. What secret memories did this man harbor? Or was this merely the male protectiveness of a lawman in the eighteen seventies?

Review: 

A Tumble Through Time is the first book that I have read by Callie Hutton.  Since this is a Time Travel Western, most of the book is spent in the past, the 1870's Kansas to be exact.  I don't want to give too many spoilers, but be assured that this book is also a romance, so don't forget there will be a HEA.

The story starts off with Callie Hutton in present day Tulsa, Oklahoma.  She is currently staying with her best friend until her wedding to Robbie. Just a few days before the wedding, Callie comes home unexpectedly and finds her fiance and best friend together on the couch "naked as the day they were born." Robbie swears that this was a first time mistake; mainly due to stress and anxiety over the upcoming wedding.  But Callie doesn't care and gathers the few things she has and leaves.

After hiding out in a hotel room for a week, Callie knows that she needs to get her self together.  Since she is currently on leave of absence pending an investigation into her charges of sexual harassment against her partner, from her job as a police officer, Callie has been doing some bounty hunter work, putting her law enforcement skills to good use.

Callie goes down to Kansas to visit her Aunt Rose, who has dementia. Whenever Rose recognizes Callie, Rose asks for her sister.  Callie is tasked with telling her that she died of breast cancer 2 years ago and then holding Rose while she breaks down. Each time is the first time all over again for Rose and Callie realizes that she isn't going to be able to keep doing this. As Callie is leaving the nursing home grounds, she realizes that she is now all alone in the world. So we have the perfect set up for time travel.  Callie has no job, no place to live, and no attachments holding her back.

This was a good story, with of details that showed that the author did her homework to make sure that the old west was authentic. Watching Callie try to navigate a world ruled by men, in a time before Woman's Suffrage has really taken hold was a lot of fun to watch. If you enjoy fish out of water stories you will enjoy this book.  I gave this book 3 stars on Goodreads.
