Review: First Bite by Dani Harper

This is the first book in a new series by Dani Harper. I have seen other books by the author, but hadn't read anything by her as yet.  So when I saw the book available on Netgalley, I gave it a try.  To be honest, this book had a very slow start for me.  I kept starting it and putting it down.  It wasn't until about chapter 5 or 6 that I really got into it. After that it got much better and by the half way point I was fully invested and eager to find out where the story was going to go.

We first meet Neva Ross as she is walking through the woods looking for just the right spot to commit suicide.  She is afraid of the monster inside her that she knows will be coming soon.  Neva figures that this is the only way to keep others safe from the monster that she will become at the next full moon. But before she can complete her plans, they are interrupted by Travis Williamson.

Travis was in the area, running in his four legged form, when his wolf compels him to head straight to Neva.  He doesn't get to her in time to stop her from going over a steep ledge, but he uses his wolf magic to help to heal her until she can get the help she needs. It's not until his wolf nags at him to go check on Neva that he realizes that she will soon be going through her first transition and the hospital is the last place she should be for that.

As Travis guides Neva through her first change and works to dispel all the erroneous notions she has of being a "werewolf", he finds the two sides of himself drawn to her. Neva has to come to realize that everything she knows about being a changeling  has been shaded with evil intent and to not tar Travis with the same brush.

Overall, I enjoyed this book.  There were twists and turns to make things interesting, plenty of action, and at the center a romance between two lonely and alone people. I look forward to the sequel and learning more of Travis' past. I gave this book 3 stars on Goodreads.
