Review: Golem in My Glovebox by R.L. Naquin

I was introduced to the Monster Haven books on another blog a couple of years ago. I loved the look of the covers and the idea behind the books. When I won a copy of the first book, I was thrilled, but put off reading it. I continued to oooh and ahhh over each new book cover and add them to my TBR pile.  I even introduced them to my sister and she read hers, while mine sat, still unread.  That changed though when I saw that Golem in My Glovebox was on Netgalley.  Getting this book was the perfect reason to finally read the series. So glad I did.

After the downfall of The Collector (Fairies in My Fireplace), the Aegis were stolen away before they could be freed from their bonds. Zoey was left with a quickly penned childish dare, no closer to having a true reunion with her mother. Now as the only Aeigs left, it becomes Zoey's responsibility to protect not only the Hidden from humans, but also the humans from the Hidden.  Zoey is dragged across the country, stumbling from one crisis to another trying to keep the Hidden where they belong - Hidden.

While Zoey and Riley are out trying to get the O.G.R.E.S. re-established, the kidnapper begins communicating with Zoey.  They want to play a game of deadly hide and seek. They are hiding the Aegis and it is up to Zoey to find them before they end up dead. Unfortunately between trying to make sure that monsters and creatures of legend aren't discovered by humans while trying to solve the macabre clues that keep ending in the deaths more and more Aegis, Zoey is not having a good time.  Basically - Worst Road Trip, Ever.

Zoey is such a great character.  She is nurturing and caring to her friends and family, while having this offbeat, slightly kookie vibe. She is totally, completely herself and nearly all the time, she is completely happy just the way she is. This book shakes up that belief in herself just a bit and I think that Zoey comes out stronger on the other side because of it. Zoey is still learning what she is capable of with her empathy and Aegis powers, and without anyone to tell her she can't do something or shouldn't try something, she makes up her own rules as she goes along.

I enjoyed this book, though I missed many of the regulars from the previous books. The author took us on plenty of twists and turns throughout the story, many of which I never saw coming. I was kept glued in and couldn't put the book down for much of the read. The story arc isn't done, so I am looking forward to the next story and seeing where the author is going to take Zoey next.  I gave this book 4 stars.

A Monster Haven Story, book four

In her role as Aegis, Zoey Donovan has rescued and cared for hundreds of monsters and mythical creatures. Now humans are the ones in need of her help. Someone with a personal vendetta against the Board of Hidden Affairs has kidnapped all the other Aegises in the country--including Zoey's mother.

With the Hidden government in shambles and a string of deadly clues to follow, Zoey and her reaper boyfriend set out on a cross-country chase to stop the kidnapper from killing the captured Aegises. Along the way, they pick up a miniature golem who's on a quest to find his humanity...and may be the key to solving the grisly clues.

If Zoey succeeds in defeating this new evil, she'll finally be reunited with the mother she lost over twenty years ago. But if she fails, she'll become the final victim.

Billionaire Lex Rochester has a problem. Someone is trying to sabotage the family company, but the investigation needs to be highly discreet because Lex suspects it’s one of his own relatives. His solution—hire IT security specialist Jacinta Greene, who also happens to be his ex-girlfriend. With Jacinta posing as his newly reconciled girlfriend, the other Rochesters won’t suspect they’re being monitored.

The last thing Jacinta wants is to see Lex again. Their breakup still tortures her, but she’ll do just about anything to help her kid brother, even pretend to reunite with Lex. But the more time she spends with Lex, the more she realizes she’s never gotten over him. Which is bad news, because she and Lex are fatally incompatible.

The fire that still burns between them is as hot and irresistible as ever. Can Jacinta remember what’s real and what’s fake, or will she be hurt by Lex all over again?
Excerpt:
She pushed aside the curtains and stepped out. Lex stared, swallowing down his drool. The silky, burnt orange dress she wore clung like a whisper to her figure, teasing his senses, firing his imagination. Its flowing lines, which only showed a hint of cleavage and a glimpse of thigh through the semitransparent chiffon, was more provocative than any plunging neckline or short hemline.

Oblivious to his attention, she twisted her head as she inspected herself in the mirror. “What do you think?”

He rose to his feet. “We’ll take it.”

“Are you sure? Is it suitable for your nana’s party?”

“Take it from me, that dress is hot.”

She shook her head, her expression uncertain. “Lex, you’re not listening. I need a dress that will help me fit in with all your high society relatives.”

“Of course you’ll fit in. I don’t understand why you’re worried.”

“Isn’t it obvious? You and I, we come from such different worlds. I don’t want to look out of place at this weekend party.”

She was genuinely concerned, he realized with a jolt of surprise. He moved behind and touched her shoulder, trying to suppress his libido in order to reassure her. “Jacinta, stop worrying. To me, you’ve always had a natural grace and style that money can’t buy.”

She lifted her head, meeting his gaze in the mirror as a smile illuminated her face. “You mean that?”

“Of course. Haven’t I ever told you that?”

Her eyes warmed. “No, never.”

“You’re a natural. You’ll fit in anywhere.”

“When we were dating, you never took me to any ritzy parties.”

“Not because I didn’t think you’d fit in, but because we were having too much fun on our own.”

Her lips edged up. “I guess that’s true.”

Stepping closer, he folded his arms around her waist and murmured into her hair, “Look how much fun we’re having right now.”

She inhaled quickly. “What—what are you doing?”

The citrusy scent of her hair was going to work on him. He could feel her body taut and vibrating in his arms, her fingers on his wrists, but she didn’t pull away. He stroked her waist, blood surging through his veins.

“What do you think?” The gruff need in his voice surprised him; he hadn’t realized until then how much he’d been lusting after her. “You’ve been prancing in front of me half naked for the past hour. There’s only so much temptation a man can handle.”

Mason Hall, Navy SEAL, has fought insurgents and terrorists, but his current mission is one for the records. Not only must he find a wife—and get her pregnant—or forfeit the ranch his family has prized for over a hundred years, he also must convince his three brothers to marry, too—before the year is up. Who knew one city girl and three wayward brothers could put up such a fight?
Excerpt:
Her phone rang. Regan jumped, then laughed at herself. It wasn’t like Mason Hall could call to check up on her. It could be Jack, though—still angry she’d walked out on him yesterday. Her stomach sank at the thought. When she found her phone, though, she didn’t recognize the number.

“Hello?”

“Regan?” It was a man’s voice, deep and husky and confident. It couldn’t be Mason. There was no way it could be Mason, but somehow she knew without a doubt it was. A spasm of happiness shot through her—a feeling so unexpected and alien it caught her completely off-guard.

“M…Mason?”

A low chuckle sent tingles down her spine. “How’d you know?”

“Where are you?”

“Afghanistan.” His voice was amazing. She glanced at the photo she’d made into her desktop background. Mason gazed back at her with his serious eyes.

“You can make phone calls from there?”

“I pulled some strings. So, are you?”

“Am I what?” She bit her lip at the excitement coursing through her body. How could she be so turned on by just a voice? How could such a tenuous connection make her feel so alive?

“A big, hairy, 82-year-old man.”

She didn’t answer for a moment. She couldn’t believe he was on the other end of the line. How did she sound to him? Sexy? Or as squeaky as a preteen at a Justin Bieber concert? She struggled to control her tone. “No. Sorry to disappoint you.”

“I’m not disappointed. What are you doing today?”

“I’m not sure.”

“You quit your job, right?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have a boyfriend?”

“Would I answer your ad if I did?”

“Maybe.” There was a pause. “I don’t know you yet, do I?”

Yet. Her breath caught. “No boyfriend. Not for a while.”

“Why not?”

Wow, he went right to the heart of the matter, didn’t he? “I guess I’m picky.”

“Or scared.”

She frowned. “I’m not scared. I’ve tried, believe me. I never met the right guy.”

“Or you don’t know you have yet.”

She didn’t know how to answer that. She should tell him right now she wasn’t interested in men. Had no intention of dating again for years. If ever.

“Regan? Did I lose you?” His voice was soft but demanding.

“You move awfully fast, don’t you?”

“When I see something I like, what’s the point in waiting around?”

He kept knocking her off-balance with that sexy, knowing voice. She tried to pull herself together. “Mason?”

“Yeah?”

“You’re paying a hell of a lot for this call.”

“We could Skype next time,” he suggested.

“Okay.” She bit her lip. Okay? What did she mean, okay?

“There will be a next time, won’t there?” he asked.

“Yeah.”
Review:

I have been eyeing the Cowboys of Chance Creek Series by Cora Seton for awhile. But it seemed like every time I looked, she had come out with another book.  This is great for an ongoing fan. Prolific authors Rock! But not so much for someone like me, who is now being daunted by the shear number of books to catch up on. So I was thrilled to get a chance to start a new series with the author and maybe catch a glimpse of these Cowboys in her other series.  Let me say, there wasn't a whole lot of these other cowboys, but I wasn't missing them with this hot, hot, hot SEAL turned cowboy.

The book starts with Mason calling his 3 younger brothers, all in different branches of the armed services. They have the opportunity to reclaim their family homestead, but to do so they will need to get the ranch up to full working condition, all be married, and someone has to have a baby on the way - all within a year. Nearly impossible, but the brothers agree they want this chance to get back their family heritage that was taken from them when their father died suddenly when they were too young to take over. Since Mason is the closest to getting out of the service, and the oldest, it will fall to him to get the ball rolling, both on getting the ranch ready, but also on getting married and expecting. To facilitate this, he places an online ad for all 4 of the brothers.

Regan is a woman who is tired of her biological clock ticking away while slaving away at a job she no longer enjoys.  She has recently quit her job as a loan officer, moved into a very small apartment and set up an appointment for artificial insemination to get started on the child she desperately wants.  She plans on starting a small company that will help people with the planning and paperwork for buying a home or starting a business, thereby getting back to what she originally loved about her job - helping people realize their dreams.  On her first night in her new apartment, slightly tipsy from an entire bottle of wine, some tequila shots while playing a Pride and Prejudice drinking game, Regan answers Mason's online ad.

I so enjoyed the back and forth of Regan and Mason as they each got to know one another. First by emailing, then skyping and finally the face to face meeting.  The author does a wonderful job of showing Mason as a take charge Alpha male without turning him into a condescending asshat. Mason listened to Regan, valued her opinion, but managed to retain his air of command and leadership.  I'm not saying Regan was a push over, no way, no how.  Especially not with the sneaky, sexy, obstacle course race she totally cheated at and the way she gave Mason's brothers a chewing out when they totally needed it. I am looking forward to the second book in the series.  This was a 5 star read for me. Totally Loved It!!

Review: Contractually Yours by Connie Cox

I was offered this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.  This was the first book I had read by the author, but it won't be the last.  It was quite an enjoyable read though there is some discrepancy between the blurb and the actual story.

We meet Caroline two days after the worst day of her life.  The high society wedding that she had pinned all her hopes, dreams and the loan from her parents on, was called off by the groom just moments before the wedding was to take place.  Caroline had paid for much of the work out of her own account, being promised reimbursement when the wedding took place. Now that the wedding has been called off, and even the check she had received at the beginning had bounced, shes looking at not only the lose of her business, but her parents house as well.  So Caroline decides to take the bills directly to Brandon D'Estrahan, the groom who called off the wedding and who she was promised would be footing the bills.

Brandon D'Estrahan is a entrepreneur who does multi-million dollar deals around the globe. But his business deals are hurting because companies don't want to deal with a "playboy". His work around was to get married. Unfortunately, his first choice of wife turned out to already be married. When Caroline shows up at his office, looking for repayment on the wedding, Brandon makes her a deal - 6 months of outwardly wedded bliss and he will pay off all her outstanding creditors and save her parents house. In return for paying off the debts, she will outwardly be his wife, handle the charity commitments, plan and host parties and basically grant him the air of stability that he is currently lacking.

In many ways this followed the typical marriage of convenience troupe. However, as with everything, the devil is in the details.  And the details on this one are quite wonderful. I was thoroughly sucked into the story and found myself rooting for Caroline and Brandon. She isn't quite the push over she initially appears and he isn't the hard-hearted villain taking advantage of her situation. There are some great secondary characters in the book and I look forward to finding out their stories someday. This book had me grinning and sniffling back a few tears. I gave it 4 stars.

Broken vows...
Wedding planner Caroline Duplessis sinks all her hopes, dreams and finances for the future success of her budding company Weddings Divine into the event of the year.

But when Brandon D’Estrahan’s intended leaves him at the altar, she also leaves Caroline holding enough debt that her fledgling company is on the edge of bankruptcy. And the second mortgage her parents took out on their home will leave them homeless.

So when the groom, who needs an arm ornament and hostess to further his business connections, proposes a way out, Caroline sees no other option but to take it.

Marriage to him for one year and she will walk away with financial security. But will their marriage last the year?

Or, like his former fiancee’, will she find the need to leave him, too?

Sometimes life is stranger than fiction.

After the tragic death of her parents, and with nothing left tying her to the United Kingdom, Ursula Formosa returns to her homeland of Malaysia and a job with the eccentrically-named Singapore firm, “The Check Your Luck Agency”.

What begins as an attempt to stave off boredom turns into a new way of life as the scales drop from Ursula’s eyes and she tentatively enters a realm that contains vengeful ghosts, toyol, demons, pontianak and curses, not to mention old-fashioned fraud and larceny. As she befriends bomohs, mediums and a young woman already centuries old, Ursula’s ideas of friendship expand into a fresh view of the world that surrounds her.

But she isn’t going to be left to ease into things. A criminal mastermind, who is also a powerful sorcerer, is gathering mythical creatures to help him possess every living soul in Singapore, and he isn’t about to let the members of The Check Your Luck Agency stand in his way!
Excerpt:
“What made you take a job with Fiona Li?”

“I think it was Fiona who chose me,” I laughed. “She had the craziest ad in a newspaper one weekend, and I was mulling my options at the time. It was a fortunate confluence of circumstance, as she’d say.”

“You mean you didn’t train to become a paranormal investigator?” he asked with a smile. It dented his cheeks, giving him dimples to go with those liquid eyes, smooth voice and engaging manner. I swallowed. I was in serious trouble.

“I don’t see myself as a paranormal investigator,” I corrected him.

I knew Fiona’s views on the Agency’s work and my own differed markedly, but I wasn’t going to lie to the smooth-skinned, extremely handsome man seated across the table from me.

“I’ll admit I’m the sceptic of the company,” I began. “In fact, in every case I’ve handled in the past six months, not a single one ended up being attributed to supernatural causes.”

“Not one?” He was clearly incredulous.

“I certainly haven’t seen them,” I demurred. “So far, ten out of ten times, the ‘bad luck’ dogging our clients has been down to greedy relatives, unscrupulous business practices or malicious ex-lovers.”

“Not one case of hauntings or possession or things that go bump in the night? Not one instance where you’ve seen something you can’t explain?”

Yes! Tell him!

I looked him straight in the face. “No. Nothing like that at all.”

Interview:

Today, we welcome KS Augustin to Musings and Ramblings. Let's all give a great big Geeky welcome!

Let's start with some writer specific questions before moving into the fun stuff. That way everyone can really get to know the person behind the writer. We will finish things off with round of Think Fast. Ready for the interrogation to begin?

Writing Specific

1. Is your writing style more plotter or pantser?

Definitely plotter! If it's a series, I start with a general arc across all the books. At book level, I do an initial synopsis, then I fan out the synopsis into chapters. When I have the first and last scenes committed in my head, as well as maybe three or four interim scenes, I sit down and begin writing!

2. How do you deal with Writer's Block?

Well that's the great thing about being a plotter, I don't really suffer from Writer's Block. I suffer more from Interval Fatigue, where I know there's going to be a great scene two chapters further along, and now I just have to put all the in-between stuff in so the reader knows what's going on! Aargh. It's terrible because I'm a basically impatient person and I have to force myself to slow down and complete the set-up.

3. What one thing do you wish someone had told you before you started writing?

That writing fiction is much harder, with fewer financial rewards, than writing non-fiction. (I was a non-fiction writer for almost fifteen years before I sold my first piece of fiction.) You just have to grit your teeth and keep plugging away.

4. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Cooking! And reading, but now that's become more of a professional thing. It's as if I can't turn off my internal editor. But cooking is a joy. It's creative, it's giving, it's one way of telling my family that I love them and I appreciate how much support they give me. The book I'm promoting today (ahem), The Complete Check Your Luck Agency, has lots of descriptions of south-east Asian food because I consider the appreciation of good food a critical part of my life.

5. How did you choose the genres you write in?

I think the genres picked me! LOL I grew up on science-fiction and fantasy, so it was natural that I would see things through that lens. I just love “what-if” scenarios and a picture of a gas nebulae can choke me up the way a sandy white beach can't.

Fun Stuff

1. What was the name of the last book you read?

Ascension by Jacqueline Koyanagi. The prose is so razor-sharp and intense you can cut yourself on the pages. And each character is so separate, so well-defined that there was absolutely no problem identifying with any of them. Even Birke, the ostensible villain. The fact that the protagonist is non-white and non-heterosexual just add to the overall interest.

2. Tell us 2 positive and 2 negative character traits you possess.

Positive – dependable, driven. Negative – impatient, arrogant.

3. What is your biggest pet peeve?

Oh, I have heaps of those! LOL But, for the moment, it's journalists who can't spell. How am I supposed to take their articles seriously when they don't even know how to express themselves professionally?

4. You are going to be stranded on a deserted island and bring 3 luxury items. What would they be?

My husband! Believe me, he's a luxury. A man who gets up and makes breakfast for the family every morning? Who does the laundry? Who loves cooking? Who finds the slightest excuse to celebrate something? Definitely, he's coming with me!

A high-quality still. Because I believe that alcohol is a food group.

5. What would we find in your refrigerator right now?

Because I live one degree north of the equator, I can't keep lots of foods in the pantry, where they'll spoil or get infested by weevils. So, although it may sound strange, here goes: three types of soya sauce, Italian coppa, half-a-dozen different cheeses, a tub of miso paste, aubergines, cabbage, brussel sprouts, carrots, beans, broccoli, fresh ginger, Thai tom yam paste, blachan, dried anchovies, sesame oil, worcestershire sauce, homemade curry powder, cream, organic eggs, every type of Tabasco sauce you can think of!, Bovril, homemade bread, fresh parsley and coriander, Korean gochujang, peanut butter, fresh full-fat yogurt and milk, sour cream, sun-dried tomatoes, butter, ghee, tomatoes, pet food and, of course, a bottle or two of wine!

Think Fast

1. Elvis or Sinatra? Sinatra
3. Mountains or Sea? Mountains
6. Summer or Winter? Winter
7. Coffee or Tea? Tea
9. Car or Truck? Truck

Thanks for coming by and spending some time with us. Any final words of wisdom to pass along?

Thanks for hosting me, Judy. I hope your readers find the book different but interesting. Those questions were a lot of fun. Whew!

Ginny Bloom Hunnicutt is crawling back home to Cottonwood Cove Alabama-- her promising CNN news-reporting career in shambles when an on-air flub cost her the job and cost CNN a lawsuit. Putting ego aside, she takes a position at the Chatterbox – the local weekly newspaper run by her mother, the town gossip. What’s a southern belle to do in a crisis but run home to her mama?

But when a mysterious hot high school football coach rolls into town, Ginny’s luck begins to change. Seems he has more secrets than a shady politician and Ginny’s determined to dig up the truth, and write the story that will get her career back on track. Everyone knows in a small, southern town, nothing stays private.

But the more she delves into his past, the more she begins to fall for the former college football star.

The coach’s star player has some secrets of his own and when Ginny uncovers it all, she must decide if she should reveal everything or follow her heart and protect the people she has grown to care for.

Author Beth Albright weaves a saucy southern tale filled with intrigue, romance and laugh out-loud comedy. From the bright lights of Friday night football to the darkened bedroom of unexpected lovers, it’s a richly layered story with more twists and turns—and mud, than an Alabama back road.
Excerpt:
“I’ll have another,” I said as I ordered my second dirty martini. The Sand Box was a dingy little bar near the pier in Cottonwood Cove, Alabama.

Covered in fishing ropes and other remnants of the life on the lake, the place was a dive for the small-towns folk who lived here, and for the kids who were lake rats during the summer. But summer had ended weeks ago, the kids back at school, and we were well into September now. Late that night, the place was nearly empty.

I sat there nursing my drink, drowning myself in what I had come to believe was the most embarrassing moment of my career. The dim lights swung in old metal fixtures from the ceiling of the Sand Box. A jukebox playing Hank Williams Jr. stood missing some of its colored lights in the corner. A few old wooden tables were scattered around with a couple of red vinyl booths shoved in the corner near the pool table and dartboard.

I had come home, tail tucked neatly between my legs, to lick my wounds. My name is Virginia Bruce Hunnicutt. I go by Ginny. My sisters and I all have my mom’s maiden name as our middle name. I kept it as my last name for my TV job. Ginny Bruce, reporting. I was a reporter for CNN in Atlanta. Was being the key word here. I had been fired two weeks prior because one of my sources was a fake. I swear I checked the credentials but the story turned out to be full of inaccuracies and CNN is now in a lawsuit. I may never work in the media again. And CNN was my dream job.

My name is now as muddy as the Alabama red dirt, which is exactly where I ran home to: Cottonwood Cove, Alabama. It’s the safest place to be. And even though I had become quite the big city girl, the one I had always dreamed of being, somehow, the safety of being home in Cottonwood Cove had its perks. Like being in this dive bar in the middle of the week late at night, with only one other soul in here besides me. Oh, God—and he was making his way over to me just as I was finishing my second round.

“What’s your poison?” he asked in his deep sexy baritone. He was beautiful. Rugged and sculpted with dark wavy hair and gorgeous lips; he was about six foot three and deliciously well built. His dark blue eyes undressed me as he moved closer to me—or maybe that was just me thinking I’d be more comfortable with my clothes off with this gorgeous man. He was dressed in a navy Polo button-down and perfect fitting blue jeans. His large muscular thighs and broad defined shoulders were evident even under his clothes. One dimple accentuated the right side his cute, boyish face. He smiled at me like he was fixin’ to eat me up, and oh, I was feeling like dessert as he slid in next to me at the bar. He looked like an athlete. Or a god. Come to think of it, in Alabama, those are one in the same. Regardless, he was heaven to look at, or maybe I was seeing him through double martini glasses. Probably the latter since I only weighed about 125 pounds and I knew better than to have more than two drinks. Ever.

“I’m having dirty martinis,” I answered. “You?”

“I’ll have the same,” he said to the bartender.

Author Bio:

Beth Albright is the author of the award-winning, best-selling series The Sassy Belles. After knowing Beth for just a few short seconds you are sure to learn she is from Alabama. No, its not the lilt of magnolia you can still catch in her voice, or even the way she lovingly describes her undying love for her famous alma mater's football champions. She will tell you she loves Tuscaloosa, even after living quite literally all over the country. Though Beth has had a remarkable career, from New York City to Hollywood, and all points in between, she has never forgotten where she came from...and what she loves. That's why when it came time to write, Beth had no choice but to write about Tuscaloosa and The University of Alabama, and all the quirky people she still calls family, though some do not actually share her bloodline!

Beth Albright has always been a storyteller. After spending nearly 15 years in talk radio, as a talk show host, playing the part of a principal character on the soap opera, DAYS OF OUR LIVES, owning her own acting school and children’s theater, and raising a son who was a nationally ranked figure skater, Beth has decided to return to her roots; storytelling. When she was in the sixth grade, her teacher gave her the floor every Friday to tell her stories. See, Beth was a talker, a future talk show host in the making, and she was telling stories so much that her teacher couldn’t teach. The teacher told 12 year old Beth if she would begin writing her stories down, she would be allowed time to share those stories with the class.

And she’s been writing, AND talking ever since. Beth has interviewed Bob Hope, Oprah Winfrey, Betty White, Wolfgang Puck and George Burns live from the Chinese Theatre, as well as numerous other celebrities, and authors. Then Beth became a principal character on Days of Our Lives. But through all of the excitement of talk shows and soap operas, Beth loved telling stories to her audience the most. With a degree in Journalism from her beloved University of Alabama, She always remains true to her roots, born and raised in Tuscaloosa, “My grandfather was the play by play announcer for the Crimson Tide in the 50s!” Beth will proudly tell you. She is a down homespun girl, although she currently lives in San Francisco with her TV producer husband and her brilliant son. But her heart is always in Alabama.

The Unidentified Redhead by Alice Clayton

“Hello, yourself. Did you have a good time tonight?’ I asked, before shoving a Saltine in my mouth.

“Oh, no. Crackers … that’s never a good sign. Too much?” he asked.

“Maybe, if you consider three more than I usually have too much.” I grimaced, remembering the last time I was hung over. I was really not looking forward to tomorrow.

“I find that the best cure for a hangover is to just keep drinking,” he said, smirking. He walked toward the other side of the counter, placing his hands on either side of me.

“Yes, well, that’s because you’re like seventeen and capable of shit like that,” I said. “I, on the other hand, will wake up tomorrow feeling like something died in my mouth, with my eyes puffed up like cabbages,” I said with a chuckle.

“Wow, that’s a really descriptive picture. I’m almost tempted to stick around and see that.” He laughed. “And I’m twenty-four, not seventeen, for future reference,” he added. I arched my eyebrow at him.

Young pup. I used to be able to drink and dance all night, get one hour of sleep, and go to work the next day, still looking fabulous. Ah, to be young and foolish again.

You’re still foolish …

I stretched my arms over my head and then back behind me, trying to work the kinks out. When I looked back at him, I realized that I had basically just thrust my chest in his face, and he was letting his eyes linger.

“Are you looking at my boobies?” I asked, doing a little shimmy shake. He froze, and then burst out laughing.

“Yes, yes, I guess I am looking at your boobies. They’re quite nice boobies,” he managed to choke out between laughs.

“They are quite nice, that’s true. And all mine. You probably don’t get to touch a lot of real bona fide natural boobies here in L.A., but there’s still a few of us rocking the real stuff.” I laughed along with him.

“I also think you like men looking at your boobies. Why else did you put sparkles on them?” he stated, finally looking me in the eyes again, still chuckling.

“Sparkles, what are you talking about?” I looked down at the girls and noticed that I did have a few sparkles on my cleavage. “Oh yeah, I guess I did. I put on a little shimmer body lotion before I got dressed tonight.”

“Wow, girls sure do weird stuff. Especially you American girls. So much shimmer and sparkle. Who told you tits were supposed to sparkle? Sorry, boobies,” he corrected.

“You can say tits, although I prefer boobies. I also like Ta-Tas,” I said with a straight face.

“How about love pillows?” he countered.

“Breasticles?” I offered.

“Uhhh, how about Flap Jacks?” he asked, struggling not to laugh.

“Nice, but it doesn’t hold a candle to sweater meat,” I managed to get out before laughing so loud I sprayed Saltines all over the counter. He joined me, and I actually had tears streaming down my face as we started wiping up my cracker spittle.

This is one of the first scenes between Jack and Grace.  A lot of the book were these little witty back and forths between the characters and I totally laughed my ass off listening to this book.  I reviewed it yesterday for my Auditory Sunday Review.

The first in USA TODAY bestselling author Alice Clayton’s Redhead series is a playful and erotic romance between an aspiring actress and Hollywood’s hottest new leading man.

When Grace Sheridan returns to Los Angeles to become a working actress, it’s a second shot at a life-long dream. With some help from her best-friend agent, will that dream become a reality—or at thirty-three, has Grace missed her chance at the big time? And when an unexpected sizzling romance with Jack Hamilton, the entertainment industry's newest “it” boy, threatens to shine an uncomfortable spotlight on her life, how will that affect her career…and his?

Funny, borderline neurotic Grace is perfect in her imperfections, and the sexual chemistry between her and charming yet blissfully unaware Jack is off the charts. With laugh-out-loud dialogue and a super-steamy romance that will get your heart racing, sneaking around in L.A. and dodging the paparazzi has never been so fun.

Audiobook Review: The Unidentified Redhead by Alice Clayton

I have been having such a great time looking for new reads to listen to and have on the hunt for things that looked interesting when I came across The Redhead Series by Alice Clayton. I read Wallbanger and loved it. Which of course meant that I would either love or hate then next thing I read by the author. When I saw the series, I figured "What the Hell?" and went ahead and grabbed the series. I am so glad that I did.

Grace Sheridan is 33 years old and back in Hollywood to give acting another shot.  She had been chewed up and spit out 10 years prior, went back home to the midwest, back to school, and got a "real" job. It's not until some friends take her to see the musical Rent for her birthday that she realizes how much she still wanted the dream she gave up on. So she started working towards getting back to that dream.

Her best friend since college, Holly, had originally moved to LA near the same time as Grace, but went into management.  She remained in LA and rose up the ranks to become one of the top managers for new talent.  When Grace decided to move back and give her dream another go, Holly invited her to stay with her until she got settled in.  The story opens with Grace trying desperately to pull the zipper on the skin tight badass jeans that Holly had talked her into buying. Holly is throwing a party to celebrate her new management company and Grace felt that she needed the mind set the jeans would give her.

It's at this party that Grace meets Jack Hamilton. Jack is 24, British, and getting ready to become a break out star due to a movie that will be releasing soon based on a serial story published in women's magazines about a time traveling scientist. A very hot, sexy scientist in a very hot, sexy story.  When Grace and Jack meet, they totally hit it off.

The amount of witty banter and sexy give and take was fabulous, plus the smexy scenes were OMG! hot. At one point while listening to this on the way to work, I had to pull the car off the road because I was laughing too hard to drive.  Grace is that funny, spontaneous, no filters, let-it-all-hang-out-there person that we all secretly wish we could pull off.  I loved being in Grace's head.  She had some of the funniest conversations arguing with her inner self.  Plus, the sarcasm.  Loved it!

Keili Lefkovitz did a great job with Grace. When I first started listening, I was a bit disappointed that there weren't specific voices for each character. I admit that I was looking forward to Jack's British tones. But after a bit, I found that she did such a great job on emoting for Grace and showing us the world through Grace's eyes and thoughts that I really didn't miss the British. It felt like I was Grace's best friend and she was sharing her story with me.  I wasn't watching this unfold from a distance. I was right there living it with her. Basically it boils down to this. I loved this book, from start to finish. Totally a 5 star read.
WATCH OUT, HOLLYWOOD!

Grace Sheridan is back. Ten years after discovering that looks and talent are a dime a dozen in Los Angeles, she's wriggling into a pair of badass jeans and ready to show the film industry that there's way more to her than just a head of gorgeous red curls. And Hollywood's newest Brit super-hunk Jack Hamilton certainly sees a lot to like. Grace is trying to restrain herself from jumping a man who is nearly a decade her junior, but Jack is making it clear that he personally has zero problems with that idea.

While Grace and Jack are still swapping innuendo-loaded quips and text sex though, the paparazzi have caught up with them, headlining the "unidentified redhead"; who's been photographed trysting at a restaurant with the heartthrob of the year. Now Grace is in stuck in a double bind. She's head over heels in lust with Jack, but there's her own career to think of as well. A sizzling romance with the newest "it" boy may garner her industry attention... but is it the kind of attention she’s always dreamed of?

Hospital Chief of Staff Natasha Lockham’s life has been all about work and no play. That is until a one-night stand with a man who lives his life on the edge, turns her sexual fantasies into reality. She never expects to see him again, but their paths cross when Natasha suspects an esteemed doctor of committing an unspeakable crime against his patients and danger lands at her doorstep. The closer she gets to the truth, the more she realizes she’s not prepared for the truth – or the consequences.

Former Navy SEAL, Malik Lewis, will always remember the night he spent with Natasha. It was the single most amazing night of his life. So when Natasha narrowly escapes a brutal attempt on her life, Malik stops at nothing to protect her, including hunting a man whose skills match his. Can Malik and Natasha outsmart a vicious assassin who has nothing to lose? And will they ever get to explore the sizzling passion between them that neither can deny?
Excerpt:
Natasha sluggishly opened her eyes, blackness surrounding her. In the distance, the hum of an air conditioner pierced the silence of the room and a surge of anxiety leapt within her body. Wha…Where am I? Her hands fisted the sheet as her gaze darted back and forth in the dark trying to figure out where she was.

Okay. Okay. Calm down and relax. Calm down and relax, she told herself, using the same chant she had used plenty of times when doing a surgery. Just calm down. She breathed, inhaling a deep breath and releasing it slowly as her eyes began to adjust to the darkness. Memories of the evening slowly penetrated her mind.

Malik. I’m at Malik’s house.

She sighed in relief and turned onto her side, snuggling into the pillow and hoping that sleep would once again claim her. Time passed and like earlier, when she closed her eyes, the scene at the cafĂ© infiltrated her mind. She didn’t want to think. She didn’t want to remember. All she wanted was to be lulled back into the mindless, dreamless state she’d just come out of.

When she realized that wasn’t going to happen, she sat up in bed, only to sway to the left and then to the right. Whoa. She grabbed her head. Once the room stopped spinning, she planted her feet on the floor and felt her way to the adjoining bathroom. She wasn’t much of a drinker and the queasiness flowing through her body reminded her why. She hated the after effects of alcohol.

Happy to see a new toothbrush and toothpaste near the sink, she brushed her teeth and splashed cold water on her face. The small gesture had her feeling somewhat alive. Returning to the bedroom, she sat on the edge of the bed. It was too quiet. She could turn on the television mounted on the wall, but that’s not what she wanted. What she really wanted was to be wherever Malik was.

That’s not a good idea.

Ignoring her inner voice, she went in search of him. When she stepped into the hallway, it was just as quiet and dark. A light from the lower level illuminated part of the staircase, whereas the other end of the hallway was pitch-black. She didn’t hear Tank, so she assumed Malik had put him in the basement since he had mentioned it earlier.

She glanced across the hall at Malik’s bedroom, his door slightly opened.

Natasha brought her hand up to her mouth, her bottom lip folded between her teeth. She knew she was asking for trouble if she went to him in the middle of the night, but the need to be held was overriding all common sense.

With one foot in front of the other, she approached his door and slowly pushed it open. He had showed her around upstairs, but with the darkness, she could barely see her hand in front of her face. A sliver of moonlight shone through the slats of the blinds, guiding her to the massive bed in the middle of the room.

There wasn’t enough light for her to see him clearly, but it didn’t matter. She remembered every inch of his strong, enticing body. She licked her lips recalling how she dug her fingernails into his unbelievably broad shoulders the night he rocked her world. And she would never forget his wide chest, sprinkled with soft, dark hair perfect for running her fingers through.

Natasha swallowed hard. Why was she torturing herself? Torturing herself with memories of making love with a man who didn’t want the same things she wanted? Marriage. Children. She asked herself the question, but she knew the answer. Malik had brought her more pleasure in one night than her own husband had brought her in all the years they were together. She shook her head knowing she should go back to her room, but she couldn’t. She wanted him. Right now, she needed him.

Natasha stepped closer to the bed. Her heart lurched when her gaze landed on the spot where he’d been shot just below his ribcage during a mission in Afghanistan years earlier. She stretched out her hand, her fingers grazing the wound that had almost cost him his life.

Malik bolted upright with his gun drawn.

Natasha screamed when he grabbed her by the front of her T-shirt, the barrel of his gun between her eyes. Her heart slammed against her chest. Fear kept her from breathing. “Ma–Malik!” she cried, tears clouding her vision. “Please …”

Malik released her and slapped his hand against the side table. Light illuminated the room.

“What the hell?” he roared, his gun still drawn. “Are you crazy? You could have been killed!”

Natasha stumbled back. Tripping over his shoes, she landed hard on her tailbone. Fear kept her moving. She shuffled her feet and scooted away from him until she hit a wall, unable to go any further, unable to breathe.

Some secrets can’t stay hidden, especially when they involve murder…

Liz Farrell is still reeling over the murder of her mother almost a year earlier at the hands of her father, Leo Bauer, when she receives the startling news that she’s inherited her estranged father’s sizable estate. Unable to come to terms with her father’s unspeakable legacy, Liz and her grandmother, Kate Stanton, visit Leo’s property in Benedict Canyon, desperately hoping to find closure. Instead, they find a bunker hidden under an old hunting lodge that had been used by Leo at one time to hold Liz’s mother captive. Horrified by the discovery, Liz immediately orders the bunker filled and the lodge destroyed but the ensuing demolition quickly comes to a grinding halt after a man’s remains are discovered in a shallow grave at the base of the old lodge. Once the press get wind of the gruesome discovery, rumors quickly surface, linking the remains to a murder spree that took place at the same address almost half a century earlier; a murder spree conveniently covered up by the governor at the time who also happened to be Leo Bauer’s stepbrother. Liz and Kate’s efforts to uncover the truth behind the murders are soon hampered by family secrets and a killer who’s intent on finishing the job started almost fifty years ago.Blah
Excerpt:
The older attorney looked at his colleague before placing a comforting hand over Kate’s. “We apologize for upsetting you … both of you. My colleague and I cannot even begin to imagine what you’ve gone through, and although we wish there was some way to avoid having this meeting, there isn’t.”

Kate blinked several times, forcing herself to remain stoic. “I understand. Please continue, Mr. Ludlow.”

He cleared his throat uncomfortably. “After your—Karl Bauer died, he left the bulk of his estate to his son, Leo. It appears that Mrs. Sanborn and Leo had had a falling out a number of years ago, and as a result, she left her family fortune to her older son, Irving. However, the bulk of her personal estate, valued well in excess of a quarter billion dollars, she has left to Maria Weaver.”

Liz’s head shot up. “But my mother’s dead!” she cried harshly.

Nigel Hawthorne held up his hands. “Yes, we are, of course, well aware of that. According to California succession laws, since the named heir to Mrs. Sanborn’s estate is deceased, the estate then automatically reverts to Maria Weaver’s children … in this case you, Ms. Farrell.”

At a loss for words, Liz stared at him blankly.

Nigel Hawthorne glanced at Kate, but she sat there holding her granddaughter’s hand, saying nothing so he forged ahead. “And your father, Ms. Farrell—”

“Please don’t call Leo Bauer my father!” The words were torn from Liz as tears spilled unwittingly down her cheeks.

The attorney reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a white handkerchief, which he held out to Liz. “We’re again very sorry to have upset you both.”

“It’s not your fault, Mr. Hawthorne,” Kate told him firmly. “My granddaughter and I realized coming into this meeting that it would probably bring up some very painful issues. Please continue.”

He nodded. “Ms. Farrell’s father, Leo Bauer, also left his entire estate to Maria Weaver.”

Liz jumped up. “Is this some kind of a sick joke?” she cried. “First, he kills my mother, and then he leaves her everything?”

“Leo Bauer’s will was executed back in the late seventies and was never updated,” he explained. “And again, because your mother is deceased,” he paused delicately, “you are your mother’s heir by succession.”

Liz shook her head. “I don’t want it … any of it.”

Author Bio:

By the time Marta Tandori reached fifth grade, she was an avid reader and writer with a stack of short stories collecting dust in a box under her bed but it wasn’t until she began studying acting in her early twenties at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York that Marta realized acting wasn’t really her passion – writing fiction was. What followed was years of writing workshops as well as correspondence courses in writing for children through the Institute of Children’s Literature in Connecticut. She credits the award winning author, Troon Harrison, as the instructor who helped her find her literary voice. Marta’s first work of middle-grade fiction, BEING SAM, NO MATTER WHAT was published in 2005, followed by EVERY WHICH WAY BUT KUKU! in 2006. With her more recent endeavors, Marta has shifted her writing focus to mysteries and suspense having “strong female protagonists with closets full of nasty skeletons and the odd murder or two to complicate their already complicated lives”.
