“So, Jette, tell me about Evan. What’s he like?”Interview:
My mind drifts to the morning we spent together yesterday. Evan was sweet, charming, and playful. He has a gentle way about him that’s enchanting. Memories of him running along the beach, moving with such grace and ease, make me tingle. I could not erase the image of him taking my hand, placing his lips on it, and looking directly into my eyes. The hypnotic vision of his devilish grin accented by a pair of remarkable dimples. The spark that ran through my body when we touched.
“Oh, Em, he’s perfect. Too perfect. He’s got the bluest eyes I’ve ever seen. Strong arms, washboard abs, chocolate brown hair. Dreamy.” I sigh aloud.
“So when are you going to see him again?”
My mind is made up and the decision is surprisingly simple. “I’m not.”
“Yeah, you’re right. He sounds like a real loser.” Emmy is shaking her head trying to make sense of my last declaration. “So, just to sum things up, he’s attractive, kind, wealthy, and he makes you tingle in all the right places. Am I right?” She’s tapping her finger on the steering wheel, obviously losing patience with my thought process.
“I suppose.”
“Then what’s the problem?”
Exasperation hits me as I try to explain. “He’s not a long-term relationship kind of guy. The way he flirts, it’s obvious he knows how he affects women. He probably has a different girl in his bed every night.” The words, once spoken aloud, seem to cement in my mind. All kinds of beautiful women must present themselves to him on a regular basis. He’s got money and with that comes opportunity. All the glamorous places he must see as he travels with the football team and living in hotel rooms. Drifting across the country surely means having a different girl in every town. “I have no intention of having a one-night stand with any man, not even Evan.”
“You know what, Jette? You surprise me. I thought you were cool. I didn’t think you were the type to prejudge people and write them off without giving them a chance.”
“Do you think I’m wrong?” I ask her.
“The fact is Jette, neither one of us know if you’re right or wrong. I think that if you run into this boy again, you should give him the benefit of the doubt. Give him a chance.”
The only word that comes to my mind is, “Maybe.” I sweep my hair back off my face and rub my temple, trying to erase the images floating through my mind. “Maybe.”

Let's start with some writer specific questions before moving into the fun stuff. That way everyone can really get to know the person behind the writer. We will finish things off with round of Think Fast. Ready for the interrogation to begin?
Writing Specific
1. Is your writing style more plotter or pantser?
I'm a plotantser (is that even a word?). Before the first word is written, I plot and plan meticulously, taking pages and pages of notes and combing through the notes from my previous books. But once I begin, a lot of my ideas get thrown out the window. Some of my best ideas are the ones that come spontaneously.
2. When is your favorite time/place to write? Do you write structured or patchworked?
When I write, I have three specific requirements: (1) isolation; (2) comfy chair; (3) movie with a good soundtrack playing. As I write, I am very structured. I will write, read, revise, and rewrite a chapter over and over until I'm pleased. I cannot move on until I feel it's right.
3. How do you deal with Writer's Block?
I read. Sometimes in the same genre, sometimes not. Reading gets the imagination going and when my mind is focused on something other than my own dilemma, the answer usually appears in unexpected ways.
4. How involved are you with Social Media and self-promotion?
I'd rate myself as "fair". I have a blog. I have a Facebook page. I have author pages on GoodReads and Amazon. I wish I had more time and insight to know what to post and how often to post it.
5. What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Teach. My first profession is teaching elementary school. Every day, I work with young children and do my best to open their minds to the world of literature. Whether I am introducing them to a new author, reading them a traditional tale they've never heard before, or helping them hone their own craft as young writers, I love the time I spend in the classroom just as much, if not more, than the time I spend writing. Writing is a solitary task. Teaching is a team sport.

1. What was the last movie/concert/show that you saw?
Divergent - I love seeing books become movies (most of the time, anyway!)
2. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Time Travel - I spend too much time overthinking decisions and if I could fast-forward in time and see how things turn out, it would make my life so much easier!
3. What was the name of the last book you read?
The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel Series - I finished all six books as well as the companion short stories.
4. If you could have dinner with anyone, past or present, fictional or real, who would it be and why?
Hanx - hands down! He's starred in some of my favorite movies. He has an obsession with space exploration. And he just strikes me as a really nice, fun guy.
5. You are going to be stranded on a deserted island and bring 3 luxury items. What would they be?
1. My Kindle

ReplyDeleteI laughed at your interview...so you are a plotantser? They always say (whoever 'they' are), don't overthink it! Just do it. Reminds me of a line from Alias (my all-time favorite TV program), Sloane says to Jack Bristow: "As usual, Jack, you are in danger of outsmarting yourself!"
