From the moment vampire bounty-hunter Rex Serano meets sexy shifter Margery, he’s smitten. When the alpha of the Kincaid pack asks him to join with them, he’s stunned by the offer, but the real draw is the beautiful, caring female who seems to want nothing to do with him.
Margery is the driving maternal force for her pack and she has one rule: she doesn’t date vampires. Years ago she was nearly killed by rogue vamps and she has no interest in getting involved with one now. No matter how sexy a certain, persistent bounty hunter might be.
When one of Rex’s hunts gets messy, Margery gets caught in the crossfire and he’ll do whatever it takes to protect her. They might be different species but the mating call is undeniable and too strong to ignore. Now they must find a way to reach common ground and trust their instincts if they’re going to fight for a future together.
I don't normally like to read a book in the middle of a series. I have been eyeballing some books by Katie Reus for a while now, but haven't heard enough about her writing to commit me to them. When I saw this book on Netgalley, I thought it would be a great opportunity to read something to give me a taste of her writing style. I love shifter/vampire romances and the fact that the many female protagonist doesn't want to have anything to do with the male is an added bonus. I didn't realize that this was book 4 in the series until after I was done and went looking for the others to get some back story. I was actually surprised at how little spoilers there were for the other stories other than the fact that the couples got together, which this being a romance is kind of a 'duh'. I did get the other 3 books and read them and am completely hooked now.
This is the story of Rex Serano, vampire bounty-hunter and Margery, baker and pack maternal. We are introduced to Rex as he is sitting in Grant's office, the local pack Alpha, getting permission to hunt down a rogue vampire in Grant's territory. The young vampire had stolen some money from his master and fled. Rex has been tasked with retrieving him and the money. While sitting in the office, Margery arrives, dropping of the alpha's slightly inebriated mate off, after a girl's night out. When Margery gets ready to leave and take the other member of their trio back to the apartment complex compound, Rex states he will escort them back, shocking himself. Over Margery's objections, Grant agrees.
Rex has a history with Grant and while in the office, Grant advises Rex that he is welcome to join the pack and put down some roots. Rex hadn't been seriously considering this until he gets one good whiff of Margery and realizes that she smells like home. Finding his mate after over 200 years, is a bit of a shock to him. Margery wants nothing to do with Rex. When she was much younger, she had been attacked by some rogue vampires and has been very leary of all of them since.
Watching the dance between Rex and Margery was a sweet and thrilling ride. It would have worked as a stand alone, but I was interested in the other couples stories enough to read the other books in the series. You can read these books in any order or just pick one that interests you from the series. This was a 4 star read.
Sounds pretty good! I've been meaning to try Katie too. That's great she was able to make it work as a stand alone so well!
