No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…

As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…

I have to start this review with a bit of history of me and this series. I totally follow this fantastic author duo on their blog and have since reading book 2, Magic Burns.  I would have discovered them with Magic Bites, but I didn't actually get the books until book 2 was already out, then read them both back to back. I promptly went stalking searching them to find out more. Since that time, I have read everything I can find that they have written, including a little known free story called Questing Beast. I have pre-ordered their dead tree books and then went ahead and purchased them in e-version to be able to get it right away and not have to wait. I have actually planned days off in advance, to clear my schedule for this series. (Yes, BIG FAN.) So just imagine the level of my fangirling when they offered the email address to their representative on their blog, to request an ARC of this story.... And I got chosen for one. Yes, that very loud noise back in April was from me finding out that I would be getting a first look at this story early. Let me go ahead and give you a sneak peek at my rating: LOVED IT!

Please, if you haven't read any of the book previously, don't start with this book. This is a series, and Ilona Andrews has an amazing talent at building a world so real, that you can totally immerse yourself in. To start at book 7, gives yourself the gi-normous disservice in discovering the Kate Daniels world of Magic Atlanta, as it grows and expands with every book. There is an overall story arc that has been building since Magic Bites. The authors have stated in a blog post (can't remember which one) that there will probably only be about 10 'Kate' books in the series total (i.e. not counting Jim/Dali or Andrea/Raphael books). This means we are heading into the home stretch. Don't cheat yourself at this point. Go back, pick up Magic Bites and start at the beginning. There's time. We will wait for you to catch. Okay, no we won't, but once you start reading them, you too will be hooked and catch up quickly.

I realize that I haven't really talked much about the actually story. To be honest, I don't want to give any spoilers away. I can say that we got to see new sides to old characters, discover new places, have exciting new fights and fall in love with Curran all over again. That man knows how to give good Alpha. If you have been reading this series, you have probably heard that we finally meet Roland in this book. Holy Hell, do we meet Roland. He is everything and nothing like I expected. I hope he is the same for you. There has also been some controversy over the ending. Honestly, I thought the ending was perfect. I was shocked at first, but once I actually thought about it, it was the only thing that made sense. I am completely psyched about the next book and can't wait to see which direction the story will take us next. One thing is for sure, Kate and Curran will grab me by the head, heart and gut and take me along for the ride. In conclusion, I have been waiting 3 months to scream report: 5 Beast Lord sized stars!!
