Madison West appears on Peter Quincy’s doorstep as expected, when her husband, Charlie, disappears. Peter had been her husband’s best man and had promised to take care of Madison if something happened to him. Neither Madison nor Peter are what they seem, but will their lies to each other to save the world, instead fail to save them from each other?Excerpt:
He pushed non-existent glasses up his nose, having forgotten he’d worn contacts today. An ex-girlfriend suggested them. She’d left him in the dust long before he could think to purchase them.Review:
Now he had but he still felt glasses sliding down his face.
A glance at his computer screen told him the knocker was not any of his colleagues. A woman glanced over her shoulder in the image from the surveillance camera installed outside in the alley.
His eyes narrowed. Who could she be? The resolution was not as good as he liked, but the new monitor was on order. If he’d remembered to order it.
He needed to start writing things down.
Sighing he pushed an intercom button. “The front door is on Main Street. We don’t let anyone--”
“Please. Someone’s following me.”
“But you’re not allowed—“
“I’m scared.”
The hair on the back of his neck went up. She was truly in need of saving. Without hesitation he unlocked the door. “Come in.”
She rushed into the room. Her momentum would have knocked down a smaller man.
“Oh, thank you.”
She glanced over her shoulder at the closed and locked door.
“Sit. What’s wrong?”
Q, as his colleagues called him, wished one of the real detectives was here. He was just the gadget guy. His days of cloak and dagger were long gone. And those days hadn’t ended well.
That's when he realized who she was. A flood of feelings he'd thought long dead washed over him. Madison. Why here? Why now? Why her?
The title of this book, License to Nerd, conjures to mind, 007-esque action and as a Romantic Suspense novel I went in looking for that thrilling heart pumping action and lady killer romance that we have come to expect from our James Bond archetype. Yeah, that wasn't really this book. This book was something completely different.
For starters, Madison was more of a covert agent type, the mild mannered secretly sneaky type. While Peter, or Q as he is called, appears to be a super nerd gadget guy. But looks are deceiving and just about every time I thought I knew where things were going, we would get hit with another twist. There were several spots that I wasn't quite sure what was going on, places where we got conflicting information and I wasn't sure if it was an editing issue (it was an ARC) or if it had to do with the actual story line and being double crossed. The entire book was much more psychological than physical and I really wish there had been some good fight scenes, car chases, just something to get my heart racing. Plus, for all we have a super nerd gadget guy, there were no cool gadgets. Dang it, I really wanted gadgets, I mean with a nickname like Q, shouldn't we have had a watch with a laser, a transforming car, or at the very least a pen with a bomb in it?
Overall the story has potential, and if you like romantic suspense without too much actual scary going on, you will probably really like this. For me, it just needed a bit more - more action, more gadgets, more romance, more something to take it to the next level. I mean, I liked it, but am definitely hoping that the next book in the series will have that certain something that will make it a WOW book.

From your review, it seems like this book was missing a little somethin' somethin'. I only recently started reading romantic suspense, and unfortunately I don't think that License to Nerd is the best that this genre has to offer, so I'm going to pass. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
ReplyDeleteMaybe not, but it has potential. So I will be keeping an eye on the series and seeing where it goes.
DeleteOh love the title. Yeah I think I would want a little more from the sounds of it too. Especially gadgets if he's a gadget guy. Hope the next has more oompf to it for ya :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I signed up for this review, there was no cover, so it was all on the blurb and title. Is it wrong to have been disappointed that the gadgets were missing? I mean, come on, you can't give us a James Bond type title, a guy named Q, and not be drowning in gadgets. :(
DeleteInteresting excerpt!
ReplyDeleteIf you read the next one, I hope it works better for you. For a book with such potential, seems the basic essentials were missing. Interesting premise though, great review!
ReplyDeleteI think part of it was that the title and blurb misrepresented the contents. And that is a shame.
