Then she got to a room that made her list of imperfections fly out the snow-covered window. The tile masonry around the fireplace— a fireplace!— looked original, as did the built-in shelves that covered three walls of the room. But her cold librarian heart melted as she took in the books crammed onto those shelves— old hardback biographies, well-used science fiction paperbacks. Was he a nerd? Her heart sputtered in glee, which developed into a full-blown happy heart attack when she saw a Jane Austen.
With a broken spine. He read Jane Austen. Maureen could very happily spend hours in this room. There was a wide enough variety of books to keep her entertained for days. She felt like that scene from Beauty and the Beast when the Beast is all, hey, sorry for imprisoning you, check out my library, and Beauty is all, you know, suddenly I don’t mind a little beard burn.
Review:
This was a cute little novella. I originally grabbed it thinking Holiday, but it totally wasn't. Think more February late snow storm. Ready for winter to be over, but spring is not quite there.
Maureen gets dumped by her boyfriend of two years at the beginning of the book. While crying in the aisle of the local supermarket, Gavin sees her and cheers her up with a bit of flirting. They both spend the next few weeks thinking about each other and trying to recreate that day in frozen foods, but missing each other. So of course, when they finally do meet up, and have their first dinner date, things go awry. Like snowed in during a blizzard awry.
Their romance does develop quickly, but due to the circumstances they really learn a lot about each other in a short time.There are some great secondary characters in Gavin's elderly neighbor and Maureen's ex, the guy you love to hate. There is some good dialogue and funny moments to be found, even though it's a novella length. Well worth 3 stars.

Fantastic quote! I would happily trade a little beard burn for a library, a well-loved one at that. The story sounds cute, I'll have to check it out.

ReplyDeleteThere were a couple of fantastic scenes with dialogue I grinned with, but I had to go with the first time she found the library. I mean come on, us bookworms have to stick together. :)
