She dances on the edge of life…and death

Not all are meant to walk in the light. Marine Corps Sergeant Khat Shinwari lives among the shadows of the rocky Afghani hills, a Shadow Warrior by name and by nature. She works alone, undercover and undetected—until a small team of US Navy SEALs are set upon by the Taliban…and Khat is forced to disobey orders to save their lives.

To go rogue.

Now, hidden deep in the hills with injured SEAL Michael Tarik in her care, Khat learns that he's more than just a soldier. In him, she sees something of herself and of what she could be. Now duty faces off against the raw, overwhelming attraction she has for Mike. And she must decide between the safety of the shadows…and risking everything by stepping into the light.

About the Shadow Warrior Series and Female Heroines

TAKING FIRE is book number nine of the Shadow Warrior Series that I’m penning for Harlequin/HQN. Each book is a stand-alone title. But you will see characters from other books in them, as well. You will sometimes see General Maya Stevenson (Heart of Stone), who created Shadow Warriors Operation with General Mike Houston (Heart of the Jaguar). Maya has chosen forty military women volunteers to undergo a year of combat training with the US Marines at Camp Pendleton. They are then assigned to black ops teams from the Marines, Navy SEALS and US Army Special Forces to be tested in combat. It is a seven-year test designed to see how women perform in brutal combat and whether than can do it or not.

These are stories about the women of the Shadow Warriors Operation. They have the ‘right stuff’ and when they are assigned to a black ops team, then they are put to even more stress because it’s always with a group of men. Each book is about a hero and heroine, but sometimes you’ll find characters from previous books in the latest one. These women are as diverse as the men in black ops trade. Some are snipers, some are 18 Delta medics, shooters or working alone in deep undercover black ops. Through it all, they show they have what it takes to fight beside their teammates.

In TAKING FIRE and ON FIRE (digital epilogue, available at the same time as TAKING FIRE), you will meet US Marine Corps Sergeant Khatereh Shinwari. She is a deadly sniper who is in constant combat against the Taliban and Hill Tribe near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. It is one of the most dangerous places on earth and she has fought, lived and survived there for five years, alone and unknown to anyone else in the military. Until one afternoon, if not for Khat being at the right place at the right time, a group of Navy SEALs are ambushed by the Taliban. If not for Khat interceding with her Win-Mag .300 sniper rifle, they would all have died.

When SEAL Mike Tarik is wounded during the firefight, it is Khat who saves his life from the Taliban who are ruthlessly scouring the rocky slope for him when they see him go down. It is her knowledge of the mountains where she lives in the thousands of caves throughout them, which gives her the edge to get the SEAL to safety instead of becoming a prisoner of war. Be prepared for twists, turns and sympathetic characters who will rivet you to the page or ereader.
