He wasn’t what she was expecting...

Derek Carmichael has harbored a secret crush on his best friend’s older sister for years, but she’s always been out of his reach. Now that Hannah is back in their hometown and newly single, suddenly the five-year age gap doesn’t seem so huge. But convincing her to see him as more than just the kid she used to know is another story.

Hannah Willmett can’t believe how grown-up Derek Carmichael has become. The troubled kid from her youth has turned into a sexy, successful TV celebrity, but Hannah’s wary of his player past and the rampant rumors connecting him to beautiful socialites. Still, she can’t help but give in when their attraction reaches a boiling point.

Trying to keep their fling a secret from her overprotective brother is one thing, but when Hannah finds herself unexpectedly expecting, her life is thrown upside down. She and Derek may be becoming parents together, but that’s no basis for a happily-ever-after.
Excerpt:
Hannah sucked in a breath. “I can’t tell you the details!”

“Ooh, was it that dirty, huh? I’m not surprised. That Derek is one sexy hunk, and from the look of him I’d say he knows his way around in bed. Just tell me one thing. Is he well hung?”

The image of Derek’s naked body that had taunted Hannah all day burst into vivid color, and the memory of everything he’d done to her last night sent her blood pressure soaring.

“Yes, he is,” she said, unable to suppress the grin spreading across her lips.

“Ha, I knew it!”

“It was a one-time thing. It’s not going to happen again.”

“Why not? Sounds like you barely got enough last night.”

“Oh God, Amber. Don’t talk crazy. Derek is halfway back to L.A. by now. It’ll be months before I see him again.” Which was a relief, so why did that make her heart pinch just a little?

The doorbell chimed, and a customer walked into the store. Derek. Hannah’s mouth fell open.

“Derek?” Her voice squeaked. “W-what are you doing here?”

Well-hung Derek, who was supposed to be hundreds of miles away from here, stepped toward her. “Change of plans. I’m staying for a couple more weeks.”

Staying? A couple more weeks? No, this can’t be happening. He shouldn’t be here at all! Her shopping bag slipped from her numb fingers and plopped to the floor, spilling some of its contents.

“Let me get that for you,” spectacularly well-hung Derek said.

Oh God, was she ever going to stop blushing? She dropped to her knees at the same time he did, and their heads almost collided.

“Sorry,” she muttered, reaching for a can of tomato soup.

“Here you go.” He helped her to her feet and handed her the shopping bag.

A light sweat had broken out between her shoulder blades, and her hair was sticking to her neck. “Why—” She cleared her throat, trying in vain to calm her racing heart. “Why the change of plans?”

“My filming schedule got changed. Plus, I need more time to sort out my grandpa’s care. So it’s all serendipitous.”

No, this was the opposite of serendipitous. This was a fricking nightmare.

Please welcome Coleen Kwan to Musings and Ramblings for a little Author Q&A.

*Offers Coleen a cup of tea and a plate of chocolate cake.*

Thanks for having me here today! Mm, this chocolate cake tastes great.

What makes you unique as a writer?
I love the little quirks in people that make them individuals. I don’t believe a person is totally good or totally bad; there is always something there that makes a person human, and I try to include these little nuances in my characters, even if they are antagonists. I also enjoy writing dialogue and trying to make it as snappy as possible, which is kind of ironic because I am a huge introvert and don’t like talking much. (Maybe I let my characters do the talking!)

What are your five biggest distractions from writing?
The internet X 5! I seem to be addicted to news websites, so I try to limit myself to checking them only once every couple of hours. I also like writers’ forums because writing can be a lonely task and it’s good to know I’m not alone. I’m not a huge Facebook fan. Maybe because, like I said, I’m an introvert and I don’t enjoy talking about myself or posting pictures of what I’m doing.

What’s the best vacation/trip you ever had?
Some years back my partner and I went bareboat sailing around the Whitsundays, which is a group of islands near the Great Barrier Reef. It was both wonderful and terrifying at times, because of our limited sailing experience (zero experience for me). On our first night I was suffering from seasickness, so we anchored close to shore. At about 2am in the morning, we were woken up by a strange scraping noise and realized it was the hull scraping against the sand — the tide had gone out and the boat had run aground! Luckily we didn’t get stuck on a reef, and the boat escaped undamaged. We went on to have a great week sailing around the islands, swimming and snorkelling, seeing turtles and manta rays. It was a memorable trip.

What’s your favorite rainy day activity?
There’s nothing better than curling up with a hot mug of tea and catching up on some TV viewing. Currently I’m enjoying the new season of Better Call Saul, and the new Steven King series 11.22.63 looks promising. I’m also waiting impatiently for the next season of Longmire.

What are your 5 favorite words?
Happy, chocolate, free, safe, and it’s benign (the most beautiful words in the English language according to Woody Allen.)

Bonus Question:
A penguin walks through the door right now wearing a sombrero. What does he say and why is he here?
The penguin says, “Got any tequila?” because he’s here to celebrate cinco de mayo.

Thanks for sharing with us today. Any final words of wisdom to pass along?
Writers write to share their stories. We wouldn’t exist without readers, so I’m grateful to everyone who picks up a book. Thanks for having here today. I had a lot of fun answering your questions!
