When the Muse Takes a Walk…

and forgets to invite me along it can derail the book I’m working on. Most of the times, the muse and I are compatible in our views of the book goals. We agree on how the plot will take shape and all the hows and whys of the story. Writing is fun. The words flow. The word count grows. I can see how everything will fit together at the end. Then there are the times when the muse forgets to bring me along and I find I’m lost in the world I’ve been creating.

From January to April 15 (18th this year), I work as a tax preparer so when the muse and I are walking along different paths it eats up a lot of my creative/writing time. I need us at least on the same path, even if we’re looking at different things around us. I want twists and turns that keep you on the edge of the seat, but not ones that zip around so fast you can thrown right out of the story…especially when it’s the author.

The muse and I have struggled over the shape of my next book for the last two weeks. My outline has been tossed aside as the story shifts to accommodate new ideas. Where did these scenes come from? I hadn’t planned them. They are not on the outline. I have the story mapped out and know what needs to happen to get the The End. But I find if I fight for control too much, the ideas come to a standstill and I find myself staring at the computer only to start pondering what needs spring cleaning.

I’ve found that my rule-abiding side (I wrote it in the outline it must be followed side), and my creative side work much better when I plan out the big picture moments for the scenes and allow the wind-to-take-me-where-it-will attitude control of the small details: the conversations, the description, etc. I’ve discovered it’s the unplanned twists that spring up that keeps me in love with the book, so I make sure to a destination, keeping in mind my timeframe, and allow some side trips to keep the story fresh and entertaining.
