Under Roman's midnight blue gaze, Shay's stomach churned with unanswered questions and delight. Of course he'd seen pictures of her. A quick Google search would have offered many pages to study. She wanted to take a longer look at his energy, but thought she’d better save her strength for when a deeper reading might be needed.

A strange sound had her turning to face Bernice.

Bernice opened her mouth to speak when she suddenly stopped, an odd look on her face. Her breath sucked in so loudly, Shay leaned closer in concern. "Bernice? What's the matter?"

Silence.

Shay studied her old friend, but Bernice's face had turned ashen, her eyes locked on something behind Shay’s shoulder. Shay spun around, but there didn't appear to be anything or anyone there. In fact, the only thing behind her was a wall. A blank wall.

"Bernice, talk to me. You're scaring me."

Bernice's breathing appeared halted, her features frozen.

Shay leaned closer.

Jesus, she must be having a stroke. "We'll get someone here to help you. Just please tell me what's wrong."

Bernice's mouth worked. Still no sound came out.

Roman bent to peer into Bernice's face. "I'll get help." Roman took off.

Shay didn't bother to watch him go, her gaze was locked on poor Bernice. As Shay raised her hand to call for help, her arm was grabbed. She stared, surprised to see Bernice's bronzed nails cutting into her soft skin.

"Bernice?" Shay peered inside her friend's dark, blind eyes. "Hang on. Help is coming."

Somewhere behind her, she could hear rapidly approaching footsteps. Thank God.

Shay stared into Bernice's blank, black and bottomless eyes, and Bernice stared back. Shay's heart squeezed in fear. "Bernice, damn it, are you in there? Please answer me."

Shay willed Bernice's eyes to return to normal. Willed them to blink. To move. To do something.

Then something happened. Inside, deep inside, Bernice blinked. A clear movement that Shay could see and understand.

Except for one thing.

On the surface, Bernice's eyelids never moved.

Writing Specific
1. Tell us something about yourself that's not in your bio.

I love cooking and baking! And eating of course. ☺

2. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Revise! I write a lot so that means I have to revise a lot. Lol.

3. How did you choose the genres you write in?

I don't choose – they choose me. My ideas are so strong I pretty have to write the story.

4. Is there any particular author or book that has influenced you or your writing?

I've always been a big fan of Elizabeth Lowell, Jayne Ann Krentz, and Catherine Coulter.

5. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

That’s a good question. I think it would have to be criticisms on my books not engaging the reader. The best – that's also tough as I have received tons of wonderful compliments. Some people have said – I completely absorb them into the story and they lose all awareness of what's going on around them. Others have said they want to be my characters, live my characters' lives, become one with my stories. Lol.

6. If you could have dinner with anyone, past or present, fictional or real, who would it be and why?

Wow – interesting question. I'd probably go with Leonardo Da Vinci.

7. You are going to be stranded on a deserted island and bring 3 luxury items. What would they be?

Solar panel, battery charger and laptop!

8. Pick two celebrities to be your parents. Who are they and why?

Tom Clancy and Margaret Atwood – can you imagine the writing genes I'd have started with!?!

9. What would we find in your refrigerator right now?

Cheese, olives, white wine and tons of fresh veggies.

10. If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

A psychotic writer who didn't know when to stop!

Later, while visiting family in England, Moria meets Florence Nightingale—who will figure significantly in her life in the future. The family also meets Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Later, Miss Nightingale summons Moria to London, where she works at a charity hospital and meets Dr. Simon Hensley.

Moria becomes one of the first 38 nurses bound for Scutari, Turkey with Miss Nightingale. Dr. Hensley, in love with Moria, follows her, much to her chagrin, but she’s skittish—about men, relationships, anything and anyone that might distract her from the challenge of being a woman daring to want a career in the male-dominated field of medicine—and, so … she rebuffs him.

At home for a visit, Moria is overjoyed to reconnect with her twin sister, Adelle, and meets her beau, Walter. He and Adelle convince Moria that Dr. Hensley isn’t the enemy. He may well be the one to protect her from the men she fears. Back in Turkey, Moria and Dr. Hensley work things out.

Simon and Moria return to London after the war. At Devonwood, the Grayson family estate, Moria’s Grandmother convinces Moria can marry Simon and not endanger her future. Simon proposes; Moria accepts. The twins plan a double wedding.

After the wedding, Simon and Moria visit medical schools for interviews. Moria is turned away from school after school, simply because she’s woman. Finally, a school in Pennsylvania accepts Moria who graduates at the top of her class.

Does Moria have the right to impose what her needs on Simon? How long will Simon put his life on hold while she pursues hers? Do they really want to open a practice? As doctors, is a practice all that’s available to them? There are so many questions, and too few answers.

Richard, savoring a moment before bed to think, recalls an earlier discussion with Angus about Janelle.

He's worried that Janelle will defy his wishes and travel into the future, looking for Moria, to protect her. His wife has always had a mind of her own.

(Richard) He played over in his mind the brief conversation he’d had with Angus while Maura and Janelle were doing the dishes.

“Is something is worrying you, Richard?” Angus had asked.

“Are my emotions that transparent?”

Angus chuckled. “I’ve known Janelle for a long time.”

Richard nodded. “Aye. I am worried. While we were still in England, she was ready to go charging into the future, looking for Moria. I made her promise she wouldn’t do it. I had to make her promise … several times … using different criteria each time to cover every angle.” Angus laughed. “That’s Janelle. She is a bit headstrong and she does find herself into all sorts of situations. Do you think she’ll go off on her own?”

“I hope not. But, she’s determined to protect Moria at all costs, even if it means putting herself in danger in the process.”

“She’s a mother, Richard.”

“And I’m a father, but I wouldn’t go off on this wild goose chase.”

“Don’t worry. She’ll see getting obsessive is pointless.”

Richard, looking out over the moonlit lake, sighed.

‘Well, Janelle, I certainly hope you see this obsession is just that—pointless.’ Richard let his mind wander, which meant it went straight to the baby in the next room. He had to get inside her head.

‘What are you up to, my little one? Where are you going and what will you do there? Is helping others so important to you?’

He sighed again.

In the moonlight, the image a young woman drifted in the space outside the window. He searched for the details of her face, but the image wasn’t clear. An older woman, perhaps ten to fifteen years older, drifted into the scene. Her dark hair parted in the middle and pulled back into a bun, she was slender with a long neck, but very plain. She was speaking and the younger woman was listening.

As he watched, the image faded and then was gone. Richard put his hand on the windowpane, willing the scene to return. ‘Was it you, Moria? Were you the young woman? Who was the older woman? Will she influence your life, and how?’

When the vision didn’t return, Richard rose and eased into bed, gathering Janelle into his arms where she snuggled close in her sleep. He drifted off and dreamed of the scene outside the window over and over again.

Writing Specific
1. Tell us something about yourself that's not in your bio.

I grew up in Watertown, CT, the oldest of 4. My father was the principal of the school I attended between 3rd and 6th grade.

2. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

If money were no object, I’d get a motor home and go see this great country of ours – with my husband. But, money is an object, so I’m happy to spend time doing whatever – with my husband. I used to have lots of interests and hobbies but since I’ve been writing full time, I don’t have much time for much else. Even finding time for reading is a challenge.

3. How did you choose the genres you write in?

English and American History were my favorite subjects in school. Then, at about the same time, I developed a love of historical romance, preferably hot (I’d discovered my mother’s hidden stash of ‘naughty’ books). So, that’s what my series it. After this series? Probably something different. I recently had an ‘idea’ pop into my head so I wrote 3,000 words around that idea, then stashed the file for future consideration – it’s contemporary, but I’m not sure yet what else.

4. Is there any particular author or book that has influenced you or your writing?

I’ve read lots and lots of authors and books, but probably the author who has most influenced my writing is Bertrice Small. Years ago, she was the queen of the hot historical romances with her Skye O’Malley series, and has over 50 books (I have over half of them) in several genres to her credit.

5. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author?

I waited a year for a review to arrive only to have it be just 2-stars. She didn’t like it, but the reasons she gave were exactly the same reasons many other reviewers liked or loved the book (5-stars). I still don’t understand that, and I know other people who have had the same thing happen to them.

What has been the best compliment?

When one reviewer couldn’t put the book down … she sent me her glowing review within 24 hours of my sending her the book! She’d been unable to put it down. She was so excited … she wanted to feature me on her website, interview me, and all that stuff.

Fun Stuff
6. If you could have dinner with anyone, past or present, fictional or real, who would it be and why?

I thought long and hard on this one. I wanted it to be an American, but I couldn’t think of one I admire as much as I admire Princess Diana. She went from the ‘Shy Di’ to the ‘People’s Princess,’ and shook up the English monarchy along the way. England has changed so much because of her. The world is a better place for her having been in it. And, she was a wonderful mother to her boys.

7. You are going to be stranded on a deserted island and bring 3 luxury items. What would they be?

1) My computer. 2) Some sort of power capability (solar, wind, whatever) to run it – and a light. 3) WiFi, or a satellite hook-up so I can get onto the internet to do research and communicate with my friends and business colleagues. 

8. Pick two celebrities to be your parents. Who are they and why?

Ozzie and Harriet Nelson. They were TV stars in the 50s/60s, who were real-life and TV parents to two boys. If this were so, I’d be David and Ricky Nelson’s sister!

9. What would we find in your refrigerator right now?

Food. (You thought maybe a body or something? LOL)

10. If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?

Thanks for coming by and spending some time with us. Any final words of wisdom to pass along?

I’m living proof that it’s never too late to get started on a writing career. While I wrote my first book 10 years ago, I shelved it until 2009 when I started to get serious. In 2010, I retired at age 62 and then really got serious. My first book was published in 2012, the second in August of 2013. I have 3 more in the works and many years of writing ahead of me. If I’m ever able to get that motor home I mentioned earlier, I can write and conduct business while on the road, even while in motion! It’s the perfect business.

If you’re just getting started, don’t expect that you’re the next Stephen King or JK Rowling. They are the exception, not the rule. Just keep writing and publishing – in whatever way you can get your books out there. It takes an average of over 3,500 hours to produce a book from concept to finished product. Faster is not better. Take your time, spend more time editing and finishing than the actual writing, and hire a good editor. Family and friends don’t make good editors as they’re inclined to say you’re wonderful, even if you’re not. Do your due diligence on publishers. They’re not all the same, and a large percentage of them aren’t even publishers, they use Amazon’s CreateSpace and KDP which is something you can do for yourself. But, above all, write, write and write some more. And, be patient. Good things come to those that wait.

Author Bio:

My mother, a non-fiction author, two brothers—one as a newspaper editor, the other, a copywriter—and a sister, a church newsletter editor, prove that clearly, writing ‘runs in my family’. Much of what I’ve written over the years was never published – much of it never shared with anyone.

My father, a school teacher/reading specialist, started teaching me to read after story-time one night when I was four years old. I’d stopped him mid-story to ask how he was able to say the same thing every time he read that story to me. My lessons started that night, beginning a life-long love affair with books—and for that, I am grateful.

The short stories I wrote in junior high school entertained my peers – and the occasional teacher who intercepted them in their travels. At the high school level, one English class assignment was to write an autobiography. In the teacher-specified chapter entitled ‘Future Plans’, being a published writer topped the list. I can’t remember not wanting to write.

After a college professor told me I ‘couldn’t write my way out of a paper bag,’ I stopped writing for years. It was not until the late 1970s, when I wrote an article for the now-defunct World Radio News (San Diego, CA), that my writing gene was reactivated. The article was about our amateur radio club providing communications for a March of Dimes Walk-a-thon. Seven of the twenty pictures my husband submitted with my article were used.

In early 2002, between jobs and wanting to write seriously, I obtained a third-shift position as a gated-community security officer and used the ‘free time’ to write what became Janelle’s Time. When the draft was complete, it went on the shelf. At that time, the industry was shifting from the Post Office to the internet – a very confusing time! In 2009, when I started my Twitter page, @Writers_Cafe, the WIP came off the shelf. What I’ve learned from my (now) 19,000 followers is prodigious – I feel like I’ve earned a degree! By August 2011, it was ready—at last—for submission.

@RileyCarney, a Colorado teen, and prolific YA fantasy author, who heads her own non-profit literacy project moved me to write an article about her. Never officially published, countless people have seen the article, thanks to Twitter retweets and some carefully chosen email inboxes.

On New Year’s Day, 2010, my shiny new blog, A Place for Writers, went ‘live.’ It evolved into a combination chronicle of my writing journey and helpful posts on publishing industry topics.

In the fall of 2011, I added ‘DIY Interviews’ to my blog (see the ‘DIY Interviews’ tab of my website for details on doing an interview). Not a primary task in the overall scheme of things, over fifty authors have submitted interviews to date.

Janelle’s Time is book one of my ‘TIME Series’ and was published in July of 2012. Book two, Moria’s Time, was my winning NaNoWriMo project for 2011. It’s now complete and will be released in August 2013. There are three more books in the series: Adelle’s Time (my winning 2012 NaNo project), Logan’s Time, and Clarissa’s Time (my 2013 NaNo project for 2013).

In September of 2012, I switched from my blog A Place for Writers, and went to a full website: www.DaynaLCheser.com. With thirty+ pages, my new blog, ‘Posts by Dayna,’ is there now, along with ‘DIY Interviews,’ and extensive information about the ‘TIME Series.’

My husband, Pete, and I have been married for forty-five years—no children—and have lived in Southwest Florida for over twenty years, originally hailing from New England.

Blade could tell from the look on Brandy’s face that she was appropriately impressed with his choice of restaurants when they pulled up to the Thunder Mountain Lodge. He could also see thoughts spinning in her head. She would balk over the expense and would insist on splitting the bill, and he knew she couldn’t afford it.

“It’s your birthday, Brandy. This is on me, and it wouldn’t be ladylike to argue about it. Besides, you can’t disobey a direct order from your FTO.”

She laughed.

After they were seated and studied the menu, Blade said, “I think I’ll have the prime rib. Order anything you want.” He couldn’t keep his eyes off her, the epitome of femininity, wearing his favorite dress, the shiny concoction she’d worn to Skip’s honorary dinner.

“Oh, I forgot something in the car.” He pushed away from the table. “I’ll be right back.”

When he returned with the two packages, her eyes sparkled with amazement.

“What’s this? Blade, you shouldn’t—”

“It’s nothing really, but a woman’s got to have a couple of packages on her twenty-second birthday.”

“I’m not... used to getting presents.”

His heart back-flipped. Another suspicion confirmed.

“They’re wrapped so beautifully. It’s a shame to open them.” She fingered the frilly bow the clerk at the department store had attached to the foil paper. “Why two packages?”

“One’s from me and one’s from Rambo.”

She laughed and carefully slid the ribbon aside on the flat square box. The sparkle in her eyes turned his insides to mush.

He’d wanted to get her something really nice, extravagant, personal. But then he would have been a presumptuous SOB—or so she would have thought. Which, of course, would have pretty much been on target, although he was honestly trying his damnedest to control his attraction to her.

Attraction? It was so much more. She wasn’t just some fling. She was... Brandy. Someone he cared about. And that thought scared him.

So he was determined to keep things platonic.

She peeled away the paper and beamed at him. “Hot damn, how did you know I’m in love with a geezer? Bon Jovi—a four CD set.” She pulled out the song list. “I think I fell for him when I was in my mother’s womb.”

Blade laughed at the geezer reference, but his stomach twinged at I’m in love. “I took a wild guess because of the T-shirt you had on the other day. My other option was Gretchen Wilson’s Redneck Woman album. But I thought better of it.”

The grin she shot back tugged at his resolve. Tempting... so tempting. But breaking down her defenses was not what he’d set out to accomplish.

Platonic.

“Thank you. This is really thoughtful of you.”

“You’re welcome.” He slid the other box closer. “Rambo couldn’t make it tonight, but he sends his best.” After all his debating, even though he was stretching it, he’d decided Rambo could get away with giving her a more personal gift, one he shouldn’t.

Her hands shook as she slowly made a production of unwrapping the second package. When her fingers settled on the box beneath the delicate foil paper, Blade wished he’d brought a camera. Her eyes glistened, and she sat spellbound for a full minute, then a single teardrop rolled down her cheek. Her voice cracked. “Blade... Tendre Amour. You remembered.”

Shaking her head, she put on a determined look. “I know how much this stuff costs. I can’t—”

“You’ll have to talk to Rambo. It was totally his idea.”

“I can’t, Blade.” She rubbed her thumb over the plastic wrap that sealed the box. “I have to confess, I’ve never been able to afford—I mean, I’ve never gotten around to actually purchasing Tendre Amour. But it’s my favorite.”

He suspected she never splurged on anything expensive for herself no matter how much she wanted it.

“Happy birthday, Rookie. You deserve it.”

“But—”

“Shhh. You have to keep it or Rambo will be heartbroken.”

She closed her eyes and swallowed. “I feel like I’m dreaming.”

Blade took in a whiff of oxygen, and a bubble of happiness parked beneath his rib cage.

“And how am I going to thank Rambo?”

“A few thousand grooming sessions with his favorite brush would work.”

She reached across the table and took his hand, slid her index finger over his knuckles, and touched him with her warmth. Tugging his hand, she brought his fingers to her cheek, her damp cheek.

If that didn’t prick his heart, nothing ever would. Then she uncurled his fingers and placed the softest, most sensual kiss he could imagine against his palm.

Part of him shouted, hurray for Tendre Amour. But, hell, this was exactly why he’d taken her to a public place for dinner. If they were anywhere more private, he would have been way too tempted to take things further, and the last thing he wanted was to make her feel like she owed him.

Frowning, Roman slowly stood and glanced for a second at the young boy she walked into the kitchen with.

The boy shook his head as he looked down at Jules, “She’s finally lost her mind,” he regarded her sagely.

Arching a brow, Roman returned his gaze back to Jules.

Hand falling away, she moved the brightest pair of blue eyes he ever saw to the boy. He again wondered if he knew she possessed that vibrant gaze when they were teens.

“Finally? You’re just now noticing,” she replied before turning her eyes back to him.

I’m an accountant

2. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Read, take walks

3. How did you choose the genres you write in?

I’ve always loved romance and when I moved down to Texas- Westerns became my main interest

4. Is there any particular author or book that has influenced you or your writing?

There are so many authors. I’d have too hard a time choosing

5. What has been the toughest criticism given to you as an author? What has been the best compliment?

The toughest was when I entered a contest and a judge told me not to write. The best was when my Dad told me he was proud of me.

Jo March from Little Women. I bet she’s fun.

Review: 

This is the first book in the Cowboys Seasons series by Kathleen Ball.  It was the first I have read by the author. I chose this book because I have been on a bit of a cowboy kick lately and it looked like it would be a good fit for me.  It is a good thing I always read blurbs, because this cover really doesn't do anything for me.  It mostly looks like a hot mess of blues and browns swirled together.

The story begins with Summer Fitzgerald showing up at the O'Leary ranch, having answered an advertisement for nanny/housekeeper.  It turns out that the boys she will be nanny to are nearly grown. Matthew is 18, Mark is 16, Luke is 14 and John is 12.  Their older brother, Holden is 26, the new veterinarian and their guardian. The O'Leary's have just recently moved from Texas to Montana to start over after some recent trouble.  Holden wants someone at the ranch to run the house and keep an eye on the boys while he is busy with his new practice and taking emergency calls.

Summer is looking for a fresh start of her own. Her parents had drowned a couple of years prior and the father figure who gave her a job and taught her to cook and tend bar was recently killed in a robbery attack that left her beaten.  It also left her under suspicion of being an accomplice since the attacker was a former boyfriend of Summer's.  All she really wants is to find a job and steer clear of any relationships.  

There was a lot to like about this book.  I liked the boys, the vet tech Mindy Sue and the neighboring ranchers. The secondary relationships worked really well. I liked that both of the characters had issues to work on and over come.  However there were also some things that I didn't like.  Such as Summer's inability to really stand up for herself.  I understand she has had some tough times, but she felt a little wimpy to me. There were a couple times that I actually wanted to smack her and tell her to stand her ground. I also thought Holden was a bit of an arrogant jerk wad a couple of times.  He finds out about Summer's history, says he understands and then uses it against her not once, but twice. If he says he trusts her then he should trust her and not just give it lip service.

The sheriff really ticked me off. His behavior was harassing and nearly criminal and nobody called him on it. I can only hope that in one of the later books his behavior will be addressed and is being used specifically for a coming plot point. I am giving this book 3 stars on Goodreads, primarily because while my perception of the wimpy-ness of Summer and the jerky-ness of Holden aggravated me, that also means that the author did her job.  She wrote such a good story that I made an emotional connection with the characters. You really can't ask for more than that.

The room at the end of the hall had to be Kaycie’s bedroom. He moved silently, stopped just inside the doorway, and breathed in the air where she slept. Sensible Kaycie, the room wasn’t elaborate or fancy. No luxurious king-size bed; she slept on a queen.

He could make do with a queen. If she was stretched out naked in it. He applied a mental head slap. No complications needed.

Every open space was filled with books, souvenirs, and pictures. He wondered if she’d kept the Saint Jude medallion. Maybe tucked it away in the back of the jewelry box or wrapped in tissue secured in one of those drawers on the dresser. More likely, she’d dropped it in the nearest trashcan the day he left for boot camp.

She deserved a better man, somebody without all his baggage. Somebody who didn’t reach for a weapon at every sound. Somebody who’d always be there for her.

The front door opened and closed, snapping him to the present. Nate froze. His pulse quickened. Not good. He’d let his thoughts wander and missed hearing the lock turn.

Or did Kaycie have an unwelcome visitor?

Other than him.

Keys jangled and Nate released the breath he’d held. Kaycie was home. He stifled a chuckle. Finding him in her apartment would seriously piss her off.

Nate silently moved down the hall. He found her in the kitchen with her back to him. Reaching up, she removed a glass from the shelf, giving him the opportunity he needed. He moved fast, trapping her between the counter with his body, his arms wrapped around, pinning hers to her side.

She screamed and tried to whirl. Wasn’t happening. She stomped where his feet should’ve been. Nice move, but he’d spread his legs out of reach. He leaned in tighter. He wouldn’t hurt her just keep her still. Damn, she’d mastered a few self-defense techniques over the years. He tightened his grip to immobilize her.

Inches from the nape of her neck, he fought an unexpected urge to lean down and test that spot right behind her ear. The sensitive place he used to kiss again and again until she purred.

She tried to butt him with the back of her head. Time to make her aware of who had her pinned.

“Nate, you bastard. Get off me.”

Apparently, she already knew.

“That Glock on your hip is no help if it’s holstered.” He intended to rest his hand on her gun, but instead, and of its own accord, he found the palm of his hand resting on her taut belly.

He stepped back before his erection pressing against her drew her attention. Her fingers wrapped around the butt of the gun.

“Don’t try it,” he warned.

“Get over yourself.” Her tone matched the hate in her eyes. “You really think I care enough about you to shoot you?”
