Waking Sarah by Krystal Shannan

“Please sit down.”

Sarah shook her head. “Just tell me. Whatever it is. Just rip the Band-Aid off and tell me.”

Chris moved from behind his brother and sat on her chaise lounge. He patted the cushion next to him. Her lip trembled, and a single tear slid down her cheek.

She liked him. He’d been sweet to her yesterday morning at breakfast. And then he had brought her food at lunch and dinner. They’d talked some in her room, but she’d turned down his offer of walking the property. It was that evening before he’d finally coaxed her out of her room and away from her e-reader. They’d turned on a old Arnold Schwarzenegger film in the upstairs common room, made popcorn, and had a party with everyone who had stayed at the lodge.

Just spending time with another man made her feel guilty, but she knew Brad wouldn’t want her to stay miserable. She would have wanted him to move on too. It didn’t make it any easier though.

But, right now, every single one of her so-called friends was in on a secret and they’d been shielding her.

“Did you know this yesterday? When you asked me about Brad?”

“It wasn’t like that,” he answered, shaking his head.

She sank down onto the chaise but scooted away from his big body and pushed his hand from her shoulder. “Don’t touch me.”

He was silent, but she could see the hurt from her words reflected in his eyes. His pain hurt her too. She wasn’t like this. She didn’t lash out and hurt people or push them away. But he had lied. He had betrayed her trust.

“Chris was under strict instructions not to say anything until we got the rest of the labs back,” Chase’s voice rumbled from the lounger across from her where he’d sat beside Sam. The others had found seats nearby or were standing, leaning against the railing of the deck.

“Sarah,” Margaret started. “we have contacts inside HPD, and they ran some tests on the bite marks and trace evidence recovered from Brad’s body.”

Sarah frowned and shook her head. “Contacts? Who are you people? The Vegas mob?”

Chris chuckled under his breath next to her but didn’t speak.

“We just recently learned that you’re descended from my uncle, Stefan Antipas,” Sam spoke up. “My mother’s brother.”

“We are related? That can’t be possible. My mom doesn’t have a brother.”

“Technically, by human standards, you would say we were fourth generation cousins. I think. In packs, we just call everyone a cousin if they have a common relative. The generations are lopsided because your family tree progressed in normal human generations while my parents waited nearly a hundred years before concieving any children at all. Your great-grandfather, James Cartwright, was my, Nicole’s, and the twins’ true first cousin.”

“You’re crazy. Pack? Pack of what? You know you sound completely absurd, right?”

Sam smiled and raised her eyebrows to her husband.

“What is this? Is this Play-a-Joke-on-Sarah-Day? ‘Cause I’m not amused!”

“I know it’s a lot to take in,” Chase started calmly. “The trace evidence in the bite marks on Brad’s body confirmed our fear that a supernatural killed him. A werewolf. You would’ve been the next target. A group of people called the Council are trying to eliminate all of Stefan Antipas’s half-human descendants.”

She shook her head back and forth. Supernatural? Council? Werewolf? What science fiction film had she just stepped into?

I am really liking the direction this series is going. The author has taken some huge risks with her characters and I can see it really paying off in the end. I am highly anticipating the next book in the series.

Council threats and Renata’s deadly attack leave the Vegas pack scrambling to regroup…

Heartbroken over the death of her fiancĂ© and tortured by a voice in her mind that’s haunted her since childhood, Sarah McLain learns her true ancestry after attending her best friend Margaret’s wedding. Can the pack save Sarah from the darkness that threatens to overwhelm her? Or will the wolf inside drive her over the edge before they can show her being a supernatural being is a good thing?

Chris Michaels is in charge of training the new latent werewolves at the O’Hearn mountain inn, now known as Woodhaven. His focus is tested when he finds out the beautiful but sad redhead, Sarah McLain, is his trainee. The connection he feels to her is strong but not magickal, and his wolf claims it foolish to listen to his human instincts. Can Chris heal her broken heart in time, or will he lose the woman he knows is perfect for him.

Saving Margaret by Krystal Shannan

The music ended and Scott propelled the beautiful and stunned creature away from the dance floor. The poor woman had barely been able to put two words together since he’d touched her. The magick between them was strong and he could feel the mate bond beginning to take shape. It wasn’t something he’d been expecting, especially not at his buddy’s wedding. She was a wolf, not a bear. But, it didn’t matter to him in the least. His family wouldn’t care either. His mom would just be happy that after nearly a century, her baby had finally found his mate.

Now, if he could just get the little female to loosen up a little.

“Would you like to walk outside with me?” He gave her a little push toward the French doors leading out onto a well-lit patio.

“Ours! Ours! We found her! Don’t you dare mess this up!”

Shut it! He hushed his inner beast, which seemed to be more excited right now than he’d ever been his whole life.

“Sure,” she finally managed to squeak out. Her tiny body stood straight and gave a good impression of being in control, but he could feel the nervous tremors where his hand rested on her lower back. The urge to slide his palm lower was tempting, but he didn’t think it would help calm her at all.

He broke contact with her for a moment, slipping off his sport coat and then casually slid it over her bare shoulders. The March weather was nice, but it was still chilly, especially at night. They walked to the edge of the patio and looked out over the cityscape. Vegas was always lit up. He never got used to it. He preferred his Teton Mountain privacy —dark skies, thick forests, and no neighbors to be seen for miles.

“I take it our mate connection surprised you?”

She took a step back and met his gaze. The spark in her brown eyes brought his arousal up a notch. He wondered if that spark would carry over into the bedroom.

“Focus! You horny, bastard.” The beast within jerked on his consciousness.

This is the second book in the Vegas Mates series and if I am being totally honest... I started this series because of this book.  I can't help myself, I love bear shifters!!  There is just something about these big guys that makes them irresistible to me.  It helps that this was a great book and the overall series arc is getting even more interesting. It's worth a read (or two!)

The power of the magick between them can’t be avoided. But, Scott O’Hearn thinks the beautiful Taylor wolf is doing a fine job of just that —avoiding him. He can’t help he’s a bear shifter and he’s determined to convince her it doesn’t matter. She is his mate and he’s waited over a century to find her.

Will he convince Margaret she’s his true match before it’s too late?

Chasing Sam by Krystal Shannan

“Maggie told you I was here.”

Guilt registered in his eyes, and all conversation at the table halted. All eyes were on Chase.

“Actually she told me.” The other man raised his hand.

Sam glanced toward him in confusion. She’d never met this other man. Why would he be looking for her? “Who are you?” She narrowed her eyes and waited.

“I’m Chris Michaels. Chase is my brother and our little sister, Maggie, is good friends with—”

“Oh my God!” Sam cut him off. “Your sister is the other Maggie!”

Chris nodded, and Chase shifted in his seat. “How do you know our sister?” Chase asked. His deep voice stroked the chords of her soul.

Sam leaned back in her seat and laughed. “I went to school with the Maggies. We all graduated together.” She glanced over at Chase. “How much older are you than your sister? I never saw either of you at the house.”

Chase flushed bright red and coughed. “The house! You were at my parents’ house?”

“Yes,” Sam answered with a smirk, loving the fact he was so surprised. “Your mom makes the best lemon cake on the planet.” She licked her lips and stifled a sigh when his gaze clamped onto her mouth.

“That she does.” Chase smiled, and she could tell he was forcing himself to relax. He laid an arm behind her along the back of the booth. “Chris and I are only five years apart, but Maggie appeared decades later and surprised Mom and Dad. Chris and I had already lived out of the house for a long time.”

Sam nodded. Her wolf had calmed a bit since Chase sat down next to her. His nearness seemed to be holding her at bay for now. It was a wonder, though, that she herself wasn’t dragging him from the booth to have her way with him right now. She wanted to strip him out of every stitch he was wearing. Dampness soaked her panties, and the surface of her skin tingled with arousal.

“I’m okay with that plan.” Her wolf snickered in the back of her mind.

I stumbled across this author when I signed up to do a book tour of another series that the author wrote. When I visited her website looking at some of the other things she had written, this series caught my eye. And I am oh so glad that I went ahead and checked it out.

Samantha Demakis doesn’t want a mate right now. She wants to finish her degree and work as a doctor in third world countries. Her birth-rite and family obligations to her status as the first daughter of a noble family beg to differ. In fact, even her wolf seems to be against her. When a chance encounter reveals the man who might just be a perfect fit, will she run? Or will she fight?

Chase Michaels has been alone for seventy-five years. He’s fought in Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and Afghanistan in the US Army. Somewhat resigned to never finding his true mate, he is shocked when his wolf reacts so strongly to a woman he runs into in the airport. Unprepared for the politics and snobbery of the noble families, Chase finds himself fighting in a different type of war —a war for the heart of a woman he knows should be his.

A lot of things are chasing Sam, but who or what will catch her in the end?
