Retired Marine Viper helo pilot and ground cover expert, Kacey O’Donnell is called out of retirement for a special assignment: to assist in extracting the kidnapped daughter of a U.S. Senator, after an FBI team is betrayed and taken out.
Former SEAL hero Nathan Weatherly looks forward to his new job as Deputy Sheriff in the small, quiet Normal Rockwell town where Kacey grew up. The former lovers have a history she has no desire to revisit, and a dark secret she refuses to share.
With a young girl’s life at stake, Kacey helps pull Nathan’s team together for one last assignment. But, she finds it next to impossible to work with Nathan again—especially when she knows he wants so much more, and she has so much to hide
When I saw this book on Netgalley, something about the cover drew me in. Then finding out that the female protagonist was a retired Marine pilot brought back in for a special assignment it sounded uber-exciting. When you add in the reunited lovers bit, I knew I had to get it.
The story opens on Kacey O'Donnell. She is doing her daily run through town, heading to stop and grab two coffees and danish before making her way to the local sheriff's office for their usual morning chit chat. But when she stops in, she runs into the lover she left behind in Afghanistan. Kacey hadn't been expecting to see him, and with his arrival, she panics and flees for home.
When Nathan Weatherly got a call that Kacey seemed to not be handling her retirement well just as his time to re-up was presented, he knew it was time to head after his former lover. Luckily for him, their mutual friend had fallen in love with the small town life that Kacey had described and settled there as the new local doctor. He had known Nathan and Kacey meant something to each other, so he kept an eye on her for Nathan. Nathan has accepted a job with the Sheriff's office and means to court Kacey and pick up where they left off.
However, before they can begin to explore their feelings, a Senator's daughter is kidnapped and the special team sent in to retrieve her found murdered. With the possibility of a mole somewhere in the investigation, the FBI turn to Kacey and Nathan to gather up the other recently out SEALs and stage a rescue.
Can I just say, Amazing. This book was so good. It had a bit of all my favorites: Romance, Action, Intrigue, Suspense, Mystery with some good ole fashioned Butt Kicking going on. I was very impressed with the author's handling of PTSD and how it affects different people in different ways. I truly hope this is the beginning of a series, since I totally want to know more about the other members of the team now and maybe get some follow up on Kacey and Nathan. Great Read, 4 stars.
