There's a ghost on the loose—and a fox in the henhouse

Four years ago, the Eternal Slumber Funeral Home put Chicken Teater in the ground. Now undertaker Emma Lee Raines is digging him back up. The whole scene is bad for business, especially with her granny running for mayor and a big festival setting up in town. But ever since Emma Lee started seeing ghosts, Chicken's been pestering her to figure out who killed him.

With her handsome boyfriend, Sheriff Jack Henry Ross, busy getting new forensics on the old corpse, Emma Lee has time to look into her first suspect. Chicken's widow may be a former Miss Kentucky, but the love of his life was another beauty queen: Lady Cluckington, his prize-winning hen. Was Mrs. Teater the jealous type? Chicken seems to think so. Something's definitely rotten in Sleepy Hollow—and Emma Lee just prays it's not her luck.
Quote:
“But he’s my client.” I protested and kept the little information about Chicken and Marla’s agreement to myself. This agreement might be the first bit of information that would help lead to more clues. And completely pin Marla Maria as the number-one suspect, which she already was in my book.

“Four years ago he was Eternal Slumber’s client.” He put his hat on, a sure sign he was leaving. “Today he is my client.” His expression grew serious.

“But he’s here.” I pointed to Chicken standing right next to Jack Henry. I smiled, trying to break his icy look. “Doesn’t that mean something?”

Jack Henry looked to his right and did a little shimmy shake. “Don’t do that to me, Emma Lee.” He shook his arms and hands like he was shaking off the dead. “You know I can’t stand to know there is a ghost next to me. It creeps me out.”

Review:
I have enjoyed Tonya Kappes work with her Magical Cure Mystery series and again with the Ghostly Southern Mysteries. The first book, A Ghostly Undertaking was a 4 star read for me, so I was excited to see where the story would take us with book 2.

Emma Lee is back, but now she knows what her "Funeral Trauma" really is. She is a Betweener. In other words, Emma has the ability to see and speak with those who have been killed or died prematurely, but not yet had closure. Now that she has figured out what she is and what her abilities are, Chicken Teater, the very first ghost she saw after waking up from being knocked unconscious by a plastic Santa and causing the whole Funeral Trauma diagnosis, is back for her assistance in finding out who killed him.

This book continues the distinctive characters that I enjoyed in the first book. Granny is back and has upped her antics to all new levels. Emma Lee is beginning to break out of the shell she has been in, and she is evolving into quite the character. I enjoy a book that allows me to laugh at and with the characters as they get into some mad cap predicaments.  I would have liked to see more development between Emma Lee and John Henry, it felt like we didn't see him as much in this book.  This was a solid 3 star read.

Thanks to Edelweiss and Witness publishing for the opportunity to read and review the book.

  1. Hmmm.... sounds like this one wasn't quite as good as the first. I have a copy and I haven't gotten around to it yet. I was hoping for more development with the romance and more info on Granny. I will have to try it soon.

    1. I have the third book and am hoping that things pick up with Jack Henry. Granny continues to be a handful. Think Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum, but without the love triangle.

  2. It would creep me out too to know there was a ghost next to me. I'm not sure this is the series for me but I want to try Kappes some day.

    1. Poor Emma Lee has had to deal with the ghost in this one sitting next to her in the hearse (she drives the "company" car, lol) and he keeps putting his arm around her shoulder. I liked her Magical Cures Mysteries too, and they weren't as creepy. :)

    1. I plan on giving book 3 a shot. Sometimes a second book can have a bit of sophomore slump, but those covers keep drawing me back in.
