This is the third book in the Magical Cures mystery series by Tonya Kappes. This story takes place about 1 year after the end of book 2, A Charming Cure. Life is pretty good for June Heal. Oscar Parks, the Sheriff of Whispering Falls and her best friend since childhood, is now officially acknowledged as her boyfriend and her shop A Charming Cure is doing very well. June has managed to become a full fledged member of the Whispering Falls community. But all that is about to change.
With a dire prediction about a storm brewing, June decides to make up a protection potion. Unfortunately, it is a level 28 spell, and though June has gone to Hidden Hall, the Spiritualist University for Intuition training, this level spell was not covered in her basic training. June presses on and when it comes time to select a bottle for her potion, finds that the bottle her Native American smudge grass supplier had left behind with his last delivery is the one wanting to be used. But when June opens the bottle, she gets quite a surprise to see a genie appear.
June's well ordered life starts to flip upside down. First by being unexpectedly promoted to Village President and then almost immediately being put on suspense and her shop closed due to suspicion of murder. Next, accused of robberies and finally, losing Oscar due to a magical contract misunderstanding. June must focus on her Intuition, her fairy god-cat Mr. Prince Charming and figuring out just who exactly is trying to frame her. All while trying not to be caught with an illegal in Whispering Falls genie.
This was a great book and I gave it 4 stars on Goodreads. June stumbles from one situation to another, trying to do her best to do the right thing, but clearly needing more training. Even though she has been in Whispering Falls for a while now, and is quickly learning the Spiritual and Magical ropes, having grown up in the mundane world still put quite the stamp on her responses. And can cause quite the stir in the Spiritual community. If you enjoy a campy, fun filled book, this series is a must read.

Review: A Charming Potion by Tonya Kappes
This is a novella that takes place just after A Charming Cure, the second book in the Magical Cures series by Tonya Kappes. I would not recommend it as a stand alone book. This story is about 82 pages long and reads very quickly, as long as you know the basic story line. This story takes place as the village of Whispering Falls is gearing up for Halloween. June and Oscar admitted their attraction to each other at the end of the last book, but have yet to bring their relationship out into the open. They plan on waiting until after Halloween.
When June goes against her instincts and village law and decides to brew up a love potion for a young woman who comes into the shop, a comedy of errors and mis-communication begins.
This is a quick read, and unless you have read the other two books, I strongly discourage you from reading this one. The characters that we have come to know and love are present and accounted for, but the book is simply not long enough to get into their histories. If you are following the series, you will enjoy this little interlude that I am guessing will help bring the relationship gap of June and Oscar between books 2 and 3.
I enjoyed the novella and am giving it 3 stars on Goodreads. This has been a solid, fun and light hearted series. This condensed version hits all the same notes.

Review: A Charming Cure by Tonya Kappes

She feels like she is actually making a difference in the life's of those who come to her shop, A Charming Cure, looking for a homeopathic cure for what ails them and living a quiet life. Unfortunately, things don't stay quiet for long. June's Aunt Helena, whom she has never met or even heard about before this day, shows up. Aunt Helena is the Dean at the Hidden Hall, the university that spiritualist go to for training. And now June must go, for her mandatory training.
Of course, nothing goes right and everything starts to go wrong almost as soon as June steps foot onto the campus. It isn't long before June is embroiled in the middle of a battle between Good-Siders and Dark-Siders. June's not sure exactly what is going on, but when June's mentor, Eloise is accused of harming a student and then goes missing, June will stop at nothing to find her and save the student. Even if that means being expelled from Hidden Hall and not being able to eventually have a place on the town council.
The point of view of this book is told exclusively from June. There were parts of this, especially at Hidden Hall, that reminded me strongly of Hogwarts, but at college level. June is growing in her psychic gifts, but most of her magic seems to be of the "winging it" variety. And we see very little ritual or training going on.
We do get to spend some time with all the very unique characters from Whispering Falls that we came to love in the first book. Though I do sometimes have a bit of a problem keeping them and their shops straight. This was a great follow up to the first and really works on expanding the world and letting the June's character grow. Still a solid 3 stars on Goodreads.

Review: A Charming Crime by Tonya Kappes
This is the first book in the Magical Cures series by Tonya Kappes. It is the first book I have read written by Ms. Kappes and it sure won't be my last. I found the book humerus, fun, a bit campy and with just enough action to keep the story moving. We are introduced to June Heal, as the fire department has come to put out the fire that has destroyed her shed and workroom. See, June has taken over running her mother's homeopathic medicine stall at the local flea market, Doses by Darla. June has been experimenting with creating better tonics, even though she has had no formal training. She simply trusts her instincts as her mother has instructed her all her life.
June has a best friend, Oscar who lives next door and has been her best friend since childhood. Oscar is now on the police force and works under his uncle, Jordan.
After the destruction of her shed and workshop, Oscar convinces June that she should check out the town of Whispering Falls, a small village not far for their current hometown of Locust Grove. Oscar himself is taking over the job of Sheriff and thinks that June should relocate as well. June is unsure, but decides to head to the village with her cat, Mr. Prince Charming to check things out. What she finds throws her carefully ordered and mundane world into a tailspin.
The entire story is told from June's point of view. There are parts where I could really feel June's confusion with how things were working out and the new world she had found herself in. I am not sure that could believe how quickly June adjusted to her new life though. Maybe it was the almost hippie lifestyle that June was raised in, or maybe it is that she has always been just a step off of normal herself.
As I stated earlier, this is a fun book, though a bit campy at times. But not every book needs to be or even should be a serious tomb to be painstakingly picked apart and debated over for every drop of nuance, real or imagined, that it may or may not hold. I am giving this book a solid 3 stars on Goodreads. It was a quick read, and just the right thing if you are looking for a few hours of distraction.
