Review: Golem in My Glovebox by R.L. Naquin

I was introduced to the Monster Haven books on another blog a couple of years ago. I loved the look of the covers and the idea behind the books. When I won a copy of the first book, I was thrilled, but put off reading it. I continued to oooh and ahhh over each new book cover and add them to my TBR pile.  I even introduced them to my sister and she read hers, while mine sat, still unread.  That changed though when I saw that Golem in My Glovebox was on Netgalley.  Getting this book was the perfect reason to finally read the series. So glad I did.

After the downfall of The Collector (Fairies in My Fireplace), the Aegis were stolen away before they could be freed from their bonds. Zoey was left with a quickly penned childish dare, no closer to having a true reunion with her mother. Now as the only Aeigs left, it becomes Zoey's responsibility to protect not only the Hidden from humans, but also the humans from the Hidden.  Zoey is dragged across the country, stumbling from one crisis to another trying to keep the Hidden where they belong - Hidden.

While Zoey and Riley are out trying to get the O.G.R.E.S. re-established, the kidnapper begins communicating with Zoey.  They want to play a game of deadly hide and seek. They are hiding the Aegis and it is up to Zoey to find them before they end up dead. Unfortunately between trying to make sure that monsters and creatures of legend aren't discovered by humans while trying to solve the macabre clues that keep ending in the deaths more and more Aegis, Zoey is not having a good time.  Basically - Worst Road Trip, Ever.

Zoey is such a great character.  She is nurturing and caring to her friends and family, while having this offbeat, slightly kookie vibe. She is totally, completely herself and nearly all the time, she is completely happy just the way she is. This book shakes up that belief in herself just a bit and I think that Zoey comes out stronger on the other side because of it. Zoey is still learning what she is capable of with her empathy and Aegis powers, and without anyone to tell her she can't do something or shouldn't try something, she makes up her own rules as she goes along.

I enjoyed this book, though I missed many of the regulars from the previous books. The author took us on plenty of twists and turns throughout the story, many of which I never saw coming. I was kept glued in and couldn't put the book down for much of the read. The story arc isn't done, so I am looking forward to the next story and seeing where the author is going to take Zoey next.  I gave this book 4 stars.

A Monster Haven Story, book four

In her role as Aegis, Zoey Donovan has rescued and cared for hundreds of monsters and mythical creatures. Now humans are the ones in need of her help. Someone with a personal vendetta against the Board of Hidden Affairs has kidnapped all the other Aegises in the country--including Zoey's mother.

With the Hidden government in shambles and a string of deadly clues to follow, Zoey and her reaper boyfriend set out on a cross-country chase to stop the kidnapper from killing the captured Aegises. Along the way, they pick up a miniature golem who's on a quest to find his humanity...and may be the key to solving the grisly clues.

If Zoey succeeds in defeating this new evil, she'll finally be reunited with the mother she lost over twenty years ago. But if she fails, she'll become the final victim.

Fairies in My Fireplace by R.L. Naquin

“Who would tranq a thunderbird?” I smoothed my hand across the bird’s back, thinking. “If someone shot at him, he probably took flight to get away. I wonder if it was dumb luck that brought him or if he came here for sanctuary.” I glanced around at the menagerie gathered in my yard, answering my own question.

Andrew laughed. “My darling, dumb luck has nothing to do with it. You’re the go-to girl for all things that go bump in the night.”

Edgar fell asleep while we checked him over for more darts. Without a chemistry lab, we couldn’t find out what he’d been juiced with, but we had to assume it was something pretty standard. We agreed it probably wouldn’t do any lasting damage and dragged a big plastic storage bin near him so he’d have water when he woke. Not much else we could do.

Meanwhile, Vi and Kam had Lulu clean, dry, dressed and settled on a blanket in the garage. They sat near her while Kam combed out the knots in Vi’s hair.

The harpy was covered, at least. To my great sadness, they’d confiscated my favorite tie-dyed shirt for the cause. They’d ripped the back to fit it around where her human waist widened and turned bird, then tied the ends in a knot in the front. I sighed. I’d BeDazzled the Scooby-Doo graphic myself.

I’d staged the puppywash along the side of the house, so our privacy would be protected from passing cars. The snoring thunderbird, the mangy hellhound and the sparkling harpy were out of sight from the road.

The front half of the driveway was another matter.

The sound of tires crunching on gravel sent me running to intercept an unknown visitor from getting within visual range.

“Crap crap crap,” I said, jogging around to the front of the house.

My heart raced. These creatures as a group were called the Hidden for a reason. Regular humans shouldn’t see them. They came to me for help. Only a few non-Hidden people in my life knew what was going on, and one of them was already here. I had to intercept whoever was out there before they saw something I couldn’t explain.

When I saw the familiar blue sedan pull in behind Andrew’s beat-up station wagon, my heart thudded harder, and my jog turned into a sprint.

“Riley!” As he climbed out of the car, I slammed into him, knocking him backward.

He laughed and caught me, wrapping his arms around me. I buried my face in his neck and inhaled the scent of spices and citrus and ocean, a combination that filled my head with naughty thoughts and my heart with calm and safety.

Riley pulled back and looked down at me with his laughing gray eyes. “You’re all wet. Why are you all wet? Not that I mind.” He grinned and waggled his eyebrows. I glanced down at my soaked white tee, my lime-green bra flashing through it like a traffic light.

I shrugged. “You’ve been gone for two weeks. I figured a wet T-shirt contest might drum up some attention.”

“Oh, I see.” He pretended to be put out. “I leave you alone for five minutes and you try to replace me. Did you at least win the contest?”

I released a melodramatic sigh and shook my head. “No. The harpy won. She didn’t have a shirt on at all. I can’t compete with that.”

This is the third book in the Monster Haven series and Zoey continues to delight me with her eccentric fashion choices and her optimistic attitude. This book completes the story arc that has been going on concerning the missing Aegis in general and Zoey's missing mother in particular.  Once again, solving the problems they face is a team effort, with Zoey taking the lead.  There are some new characters introduced that I think we will be seeing more of in later books. Overall this was a great addition to the series and I love learning more and more about Zoey's world.

A migration of mythical creatures has begun, and more and more of them are landing on Zoey Donovan's doorstep. As the only Aegis left in the country, it falls to her to protect the Hidden and keep them safe—and her house has become a sanctuary for water sprites, goblins, harpies, djinn and more.

Keeping track of her boarders is a full-time job, and Zoey's already got her hands full trying to run her wedding planning business. Good thing she has a resident closet monster to keep her organized, and a hot Reaper boyfriend to help her relax every once in a while.

But she can't keep up monster-triage indefinitely, and as more Hidden arrive, it becomes clear that someone—or something—is hunting them. In the midst of planning an event for a notoriously difficult client, Zoey's got to figure out who's behind the hunt…and she's got to stop them before there are no Hidden left.

Pooka in My Pantry by R.L. Naquin

The phone was heavy in the palm of my hand. I stared at it, unblinking. The curves and buttons blended together and made no sense, much like if you say a word over and over until it becomes meaningless.

My gaze was broken when Maurice laid his hand over the phone and curled his fingers around it.

“Zo, what’d he say? You okay?”

I blinked. “He wants to see me tomorrow morning.”

“Did he explain, at least?”

“No.”

I could tell Maurice wanted to say more, but he closed his mouth. It took a lot for Maurice to keep his opinion to himself, especially when it came to my well-being. But Maurice, and every other creature in my house, was afraid of Riley. Apparently, reapers were scary guys, even to monsters. The night he came to the house, everybody disappeared without warning, making me feel like I was missing some vital piece of information.

After the enigmatic phone call, I was a wreck for the rest of the night, of course. I couldn’t sit for more than a few minutes. I painted my nails twice, first in bright red, then in a more subdued aqua. I yanked half my closet apart, spreading clothes on the floor and trying to decide what to wear. Maurice, ever the caretaker, made me a chocolate-peanut-butter pie to keep me occupied and soothed.

I yelled a lot. I cried a little. I cracked self-effacing jokes. Maurice became alarmed when I disappeared into the garage and returned with a hammer and nails.

“What are you doing, Zo?” He kept his voice light and eased closer to me, as if I held a gun or a venomous snake.

“I need to fix the cupboard door in the guest bathroom.”

He eased the hammer from my grip, and somehow it disappeared. “I fixed that weeks ago. How about we play Monopoly? You like Monopoly.”

His tone of voice made me realize how bat-shit crazy I was acting. It wasn’t like me to let a guy put me into such a tailspin. I relaxed and passed Maurice the handful of mismatched nails.

“I’m a freak. Let’s find a movie to watch.”,

This book was better than the first.  Because now that we are all aboard the wacky supernatural train that is Zoey's life, we are zooming full speed ahead.  The governing board of the Supernatural Community has their eye on Zoey and are waiting for her to either prove she is an Aegis or for her death to catch up with her, all the while spying on any time that she and Riley have together. Problem is, Zoey doesn't know what an Aegis is or how to prove or disprove she is one.  Add in the fact that the Leprechaun Mafia is targeting all the businesses in the area that are run by humans, but with ties tot the supernatural community and poor Zoey is having a very bad week.

Zoey is the kind of best friend anyone would want.  She is kind, tough, smart and just weird enough to make you laugh and shake your head in wonder what she will think up next.  I like that though she tries her best, a lot of the time, it is a group effort to get her out of the trouble she seems to find herself in.  She relies on her friends, and they know that they can rely on her in turn.  I gave this book 4 stars.

Zoey Donovan—empath, wedding planner, go-to girl for monsters with personal problems—has been marked twice for pickup by Death. On both occasions, Riley the smoking-hot reaper has refused to follow through. For his breach of protocol, Riley is now on probation. For her refusal to die on schedule, Zoey's right to live is challenged. She will have to undergo a life-or-death trial, but she won't know when or where it will happen…

Staying alive might not be so difficult if the Leprechaun Mafia hadn't strolled into town. Now every business owner with the slightest connection to the supernatural community is being threatened with the most appalling bad luck if they don't pay up. Mirrors are smashed, bodies are dropping, and Zoey's still got clients waiting for fabric samples.

With a little luck, she might be able to save everyone and still have time for a second attempt at a decent first date with her favorite reaper.

Monster in My Closet by R.L. Naquin

Most days I stopped off at a local coffee shop and grabbed a pastry and cappuccino. Since a delicious breakfast had been forced on me, I didn’t need the pastry. Still, I needed the coffee. Coffee at home is one thing—I was grateful for the cup I’d been handed to wash down the sandwich. A venti for the office was non-negotiable, all the same.

The little coffee shop two blocks from my office was crowded, even for a Monday morning. I inhaled the heavy scent of roasted beans but the various perfumes and colognes of the customers jostled my nostrils in a hostile takeover. The woman in line in front of me was especially obnoxious. Her perfume was thick and flowery, assailing me like a child throwing a tantrum. “Look at me! Look at me!” it seemed to shriek.

I’ve always taken offense at people wearing heavy perfume. It’s as if they have no respect for boundaries. If I wanted my personal space to reek of lavender and musk, I’d dump a vat of bath salts into the tub and go for a soak. It’s rude to think everyone wants that stuffed up their noses. Whatever happened to subtlety?

I rubbed at my nose with the back of my hand, as if that might clear out some of the stench.

“It is a little much.” The voice came from behind me in line, low and secretive, as if he didn’t want anyone but me to hear him.

I was embarrassed. I had hoped no one else had caught me trying to wipe away the smell. I turned to answer and was caught off guard. In fact, I babbled like an idiot.

“You,” I said, already kicking myself for my lack of suavity. “I saw you on TV the other night.”

He looked puzzled, probably afraid I’d confused him with an actor or talk show host. “You know,” I said, trying to clarify, “on the news. Taking the grocery clerk to the ambulance. Or her body anyway.” Shut up, Zoey. Please shut up. “It was a shock. I’d just been in there talking to her the day before. I bought cheese.” Oh for the love of the one-eyed god of wombats, will you stop now?

I was intrigued for quite awhile about this book, but it wasn't until recently that I finally got a chance to read it.  Zoey is such a great character. I know it sounds coincidental, but I totally see Zooey Deschanel from New Girl, but as a red head.  They both have this goofy, fun loving, kinda sideways view of life. Zoey is a fun character in a interesting world. Watching her find out about the Hidden and discover a completely new version of her life is a real treat.

I stopped believing in monsters long ago. But I knew I wasn't imagining things when I found one in my kitchen baking muffins. I'd seen him before: lurking in my closet, scaring the crap out of my five-year-old self. Turns out that was a misunderstanding, and now Maurice needs a place to stay. How could I say no?

After all, I've always been a magnet for the emotionally needy, and not just in my work as a wedding planner. Being able to sense the feelings of others can be a major pain. Don't get me wrong, I like helping people--and non-people. But this ability has turned me into a gourmet feast for an incubus, a demon that feeds off emotional energy. Now, brides are dropping dead all over town, and my home has become a safe house for the supernatural. I must learn to focus my powers and defeat the demon before he snacks on another innocent woman and comes looking for the main course...
